access privileges

I am a very new user and am attempting to load my 5th gen ipod for the first time. I frequently receive the following message: "The itunes library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation". I have searched the help index and can find no reference to either 'access' or privileges. Can anyone help please? OS is Windows Vista home premium.

Are you on an administrator-prileledges user account?
If not, try logging off your current user, and log
into an administrator one.

Have you upgraded to iTunes 7.1.0.59 yet? To download
it, go to this page:

Download iTunes

Also, try going thourgh these steps:

I am very sorry but I can not find out whether I am using administrator privileges. Again the index in help does not help me find any reference to administrator. As regards the 5r's I have today downloaded the latest Itunes 7.1 and have restored my ipod to factory settings - currently re-syncing. Will wait until the sync is complete and try to load more cd's and see if the problem re-occurs. Thank you for your assistance.

I have the same problem. All of the music on my iPod before I upgraded to vista is on there. I can copy movies and photos, however with My Music folder I do not have "write privliges". I tried going to properties and unchecking the read-only box, however it instantly goes back to read-only and my ipod will not sync any new music to it. This is extremely annoying. Has anyone found a solution yet?

I've gotten this message several times, I've also been searching for and answer, none found yet.

It started right away for me(new Ipod, new computer,Vista)always when importing CDs to Itunes. what I've been doing is clicking "advanced" on top of page and consolidating library after every CD that does this. havent had any problems with music loading to Ipod.

2 warnings,
I'm not sure what this is doing, if anything to fix any problem, but I'm not having music loading problems( Photos on the other hand ,I cant load)
and I dont think you want to do this if you have other music files that you dont use on your Ipod, pretty sure this drags ALL music into Itunes.

Is this a problem with people who use vista & itunes, looking through the forums it seems to be. I have just upgraded to vista from xp, also upgraded to itunes 7.2 & cannot update ipod at all from "my music" because of "write access" This problem is annoying because have just brought loads of new music & wish to put it on ipod. please help! Could it be down to a faulty or corrupt music file?

I have the same problem since i installed Vista. i tried everything: the 5 R's, manual updates, restoring,... but nothing works! The thing that worked the most is the manual updating but there are still some songs that i cannot get on to my ipod. Also, i don't know if it has to do with vista but there are some songs on my nano that won't play... actually 3/4 of the songs won't play, i have to press the "back" and "forth" button and the "play/pause" at exact moments to make them play, REALLY frustrating.
Thanks for any help possible... just please help! 🙂

Hi Kids,

It seems this was answered in a separate forum, so I can't claim credit for it, but you should check to see if your iTunes folder is set to READ ONLY.
SO the file path would be;
C:Documents & Settings
My Documents
My Music
iTunes

Right click on itunes folder and go to properties.
You should see a green shaded in square next to Read Only.
Untick it (or tick it to untick it 🙂 )
Hope this helps people. I have been wandering around lost for a few hours trying to remember what I did all those months ago to sort it out. Thank god for Forums.
I just love resetting iPods. 😟

Ok, looks like I lied.
The file seems to be resetting itself back to Read Only periodically.
I spoke with one of the Apple Stores here, and they have suggested that I disconnect the Ipod from the PC, then open the iTunes and let it upload the cd into the library that way.
They seem to think that the PC may be trying to update the iPod at the same time as the Library.
Worth a try I suppose.
They have also said that Sony have a certain type of disc/cd out that won't let transfers happen due to piracy issues.
Now if anyone can tell me why my pc is not recognising a Jack Johnson cd I recently purchased, I would be most grateful.

Hey Deggie,

Thanks for the tip, but it seems to be ok now. I must have a real sensitive DVD Drive 🙂

As far as the Access pRivileges go, I have still been encountering this problem, so asked around again. It seems that we may not have this problem if we just let the ipod install to the default location it comes up with at the install prompt. This also means that the library will be at the default install location. So C:Program Files/My Music/iTunes/iTunes music. I have now uninstalled & reinstalled again, lost about 4 cd's off the library & ipod in the process & have now reuploaded them without a problem (so far).
Hope this helps
