miniDV audio sample rate issue

I cannot get the audio sample rate to match. I have captured miniDV footage (32mhz/12bit). In Sequence settings the audio options for bit are 8, 16, 24. My audio is out of sync!!!! What can I do? I have 2 hours of raw footage and can't proceed! Any help is VERY appreciated. thanks in advance!

If you can play the source clips in the viewer and the audio is in sync there, try converting the audio to 48/16 in a batch and bring that back in for editing.

If the audio is out of sync even when looking at the source clips in the viewer, then see if you can recapture then using a 48k capture setting. This should convert the 32k audio to 48 at capture. This usually generates an alert about " the sample rate does not match your source..." but the resulting 48k audio is usually in sync with my video when I do it this way.

Hope this helps -

Yes, Max you´re right ... but they did it at 32k is because they used 4 channel audio (i think!) ... capturing at 48k will they have all 4 channel separated (? - also a question for me) - capturing via firewire from a "normal" camera, for exemple?
I also edit in Avid and with minidv´s they have to record at 32k so they can have 4 chns, the "tip" is to change the sample rate of the project (from 48k to 32k) capture the material and then edit (Avid does the conversion), does it happen in FCP (?) could that be possible have two capture two different SRs in the same project?
Thank you!

If you are using a DV NTSC 48k easy setup in FCP, the audio should be converted to 48k at capture. If you need to get all 4 channels oof audio off the tape, and capturing at 32k is giving your sync problems, try capturing in 48 and change the downmix setting on the deck so you are monitoring 3&4 and do an extra capture for the other two channels. You might also try simply capturing the analog audio instead.

Hi again!
Hum ... that´s not as simple as it could be!
That way i´ll have to capture twice?!
There must be another way of doing it ⚠, i don´t think Avid can do it and FCP don´t ⚠.
As i told you i use both systems and i know they´re limitions (or i think i know!), but it´s strange because Avid Xpress DV 3.5 (from the age of stone 🙂 ) do it in a blink ... ok ... found an FCP limitation!
Thank you!
If there´s another way ... please feel free to post it!

If you capture as 32k, you should be able to capture all 4 channels at once, though you may have to customize the capture preset.

editing 32k in a 48k timeline may be the cause of your sync problem, so I'd recommend converting the 32k audio to 48k using batch export.

I'd try this method first, and if that doesn't work, then try capturing as 48, which will only allow you to capture 2 channels at a time. However, duplicating the offline clip and capturing a second audio-only version of it should be fairly simple if you need whatever iis on channels 3&4.

Hi Max (again!)
Yes ... i agree with you!
The best way is to duplicate the clip(s) and batch capture it again ... and that should be the correct option! (if you have disc space / time to edit / ... / ... )
If i have to do it in FCP ... i´ll do this way! If it´s "cut on the fly" and if i have 30 mins you tape and 1 hour to edit i´ll use other way!
We both agree with our options!
Thank you!

All you did was transfer your problem further down the line. DV stream is not a native FCP editing format and capturing in it is not recommended. It's almost always better to get the capture correct.

What you need to do is capture at 32/12, export each track as a distinct audio clip then, using iTunes or QTPro, resample each one from 32/12 to 48/16 and reimport them to FCP.

It sounds like a bit of work but goes very very quickly and will allow to edit using a native codec.

yea, it's me again with the same issue! first of all, i can't find a capture setting in FCP for 32/12. the options are only 32/8 or 32/16. what the heck am i missing? second, i captured at 32/16, the audio wasn't synched. so i exported the audio (not even sure i did that right) and then reimported after resampling and it didn't make any difference. what am i missing?
