Remember:
1. Backup before you update
2. Repair permissions before and after an update!
3. If possible with your Internet connection use the standalone Combo update: Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC) or Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (Intel)

If I have a system I haven't used (and hence patched) recently, does the 10.4.9 Combo updater incorporates all the stuff so far, so that I may apply only this and not have to install all of the other older patches?

Yes. I always go straight to the combo updater for every OS update because most of the reports of problems I've seen through the years have typically come from people who updated using the delta updater and many times the remedy is to run the combo updater.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I performed an Archive and Install last night. From what I've observed thus far, just about everything I had - iTunes library, Office files, photos, etc - remained intact. Nice.

Your System Folder is renamed and replaced, but I've yet to see any adverse effects from it (reset my trial period for Adobe InDesign, but I'm okay with that).

"However if you were to skip one of the incremental updates along the way you could be missing some important component that could cause problems for the next update."

What? The Software Update mechanism takes into account the situation where the user may have skipped an update -- it basically downloads the combo updater in that case

Well - I did the update yesterday - and I'm a total technoidiot .

Did everything from Software update - so I had iPhoto , Airport as well.

Repaired permissions before doing it , got the updates done with no snags , started the restart and went away to make some coffee [ can't stand waiting to see if it restarts properly ] Came back - everything up and running normally, it seemed . Repaired permissions again [ no alterations made ] and went online again.

Only thing I found was that my screen was much darker than before - so dealt with that using F2.

I've been performing conservative updates for years and have never had a problem before.

• There are no external devices connected to my iBook
• I Repaired Permissions from my installed Disk Utility prior to updating
• I repaired the Hard Drive from my OS X DVD's Disk Utility
• I downloaded and used the PPC Combo Updater

During the Install I received a message that an error was encountered and to reinstall the updater. When I rebooted I received a Kernel Panic.

So far I have run Disk Warrior 4.0 several times (it claims to have repaired "minor" problems, the OS X Install DVD Disk Utility to repair the HD (reran it until no repairs were necessary and have started up from TechToolPro 4.1's eDrive. During the Volume check TTP reports "Bitmap Mismatch (-90)".

The iBook will not start in the Safe Mode - the "gear" just keeps spinning on a blue screen until I force a shutdown. And, after completing HD repair, the startup choices indicates that the iBook's internal HD has OS 10.4.9 installed!

Sad to say, 10.4.9 caused two of four 1GB RAM modules in my "Revision A" PowerMac Dual 2 GHz G5 to be recognized by OS X as 512MB modules. These were "Samsung original" RAM modules purchased from OWC in March 2005 which worked flawlessly with Panther and Tiger previously.

The process of updating went smoothly: repaired permissions and all UNIX maintenance scripts prior, removed devices except for keyboard and mouse, updated with Combo updater. System double rebooted, 10.4.9 came up smoothly and repaired permissions afterwards. Only 3GB of RAM recognized under System Profiler, with two of four 1GB RAM modules listed as 512MB. It made no difference to reseat RAM in their slots or switch affected RAM to different slots. Original stock 256MB RAM modules and unaffected Samsung modules are recognized appropriately regardless of slot used. There have been no kernel panics or unusual application behaviors.

OWC Customer support was very professional. After discussing with Tech support, they concluded the 10.4.9 update must have altered the firmware and damaged the RAM modules. It was their first such report with this update. Replacement RAM is coming under warranty.

I have heard of this problem before with prior updates. Should removal of "3rd party RAM" be included in the update process?

Did software update with no problems.

As usual didn't repair permissions beforehand, but afterwards changed permissions myself on the iTunes framewok. There are some permissions I don't like having reset automatically, e.g., secure.log, because I like being able to read the log as admin in the Console app rather than reading it in the terminal with sudo.

Perhaps the most 2nd most important thing (after a backup which is #1) to do is to verify, and repair if necessary, the director structure. This where I have had problems in the past.

Most of the problems that people have with unbootable ugrades PROBABLY resulted from a corrupted directory before they did the upgrade.

The Intel iMac booted twice, it was a surprise. The PB G4 did not boot twice, neither did a G3 iBook.
