10.4.9 Update released. Remember: Repair permissions before you update!!!

Things are going to get real interesting in the days ahead. As Samuel L. Jackson said in Jurassic Park, "Hold on to your butts." 🙂

I like big updates like this. Lots of stuff to chew on.




Dual 2.5GHz G5 Power Macintosh Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ran with combo on 1.8 SP G5. Took no precautions whatsoever but I do have good backups. Left two FW drives attached and ignored Perms. Double restart as I suspected then ran Perm verify and all is well. The restart was certainly slow but not unusual after a hefty update.

Edit: I see SuperDuper! has just kicked in with a regular Smart backup. We shall see what happens. I do have another recent backup so letting SD! run. No doubt SD! will take longer this time.

Backed up my data.

Disconnected all devices ( apart from keyboard and mouse )

Repaired permissions before applying the update.

Applied update.

Restarted.

Reconnected all my devices.

Repaired permissions again.

Now running 10.4.9.

I asked this question in Ian's other thread, but there seems to be activity here.

I do all the things Ian listed, except that I always update using Software Update, not the combo. I have so far not had any problems.

Am I being a fool not to update via the combo updater?

Just installed it via Software Update. Didn't unplug anything, but repaired permissions afterwards.

That is what I have done for all of the other upgrades in the past and plan to do this time also. I always say I will use the Combo if Software Update doesn't work for me. So far it hasn't let me down.

Blimey, my first bad experience with an update! MacBook wouldn't boot back up after updating, just stayed on the Apple screen with the spinning wheel for over 15 mins.

Had to reboot from my external backup and then downloaded and reinstalled the combo update. Seems fine now...

This update took a long while (at least for me).
My MB fans sounded like jet engines for almost 2 minutes after restart, subsided, verified/repaired permissions and was up and running.
No adverse effects so far (my fingers are crossed as I'm knocking on wood).

Had slight problem as well, hung on "Starting Mac OS X" bar. Had to turn off using power button. Restarted, seems OK, no permissions needed repairing, luckily.

My own use of the Combo goes back to one unfortunate episode way back which caused me grief. Ever since, I have always taken the Combo route with System Updates. Most of the Applications I download in background. In part this is due to concerns with broken internet connections from time to time.

Got the prompt from software update, and did the 10.4.9 update. Clicked restart, and after 15 minutes, no restart, just a blue screen.

Manually powered down, restarted, got the welcome to mac screen, then when to a blue screen with just the mouse cursor.

Booted into safe mode, logged in with correct password, but the computer went back to login screen each time I tried to log in.

Booted to a good system drive, and ran permissions and verify disk, both were fine.

Tried to download the combo update, but Apple's servers are at a complete crawl. What is up with that?

What is next to get out of this mess?

Finished applying the update per the directions in the original post. Everything working fine, though the second restart freaked me out for a minute. Hope all goes well with everyone else.

woah, ok that was a pain to even navigate this far.

just got the auto update and went ahead with it as i have never had an issue yet updating.

till now.


now my mouse works like crap, it barley moves across the screen when i navigate and the scroll wheel has the same sketchy delay in it since the update.

using my computer will now be almost p[ointless or at least using a mouse.

is this a known glitch with this update and how can i fix it if so? if not then i wanna go back to when i had no probs with my computer before i updated.

HELP!!!
