Accidentally dragged Applications folder to trash - Now I can't update apps

Hi,

I did something you shouldn't do. I mistakenly dragged the Applications folder to the trash. Things haven't really worked right since...

1- Automatic Updates no longer sees programs it needs to see
2- When I download the Updates manually, I can't install them. The installer says that it can't find the app in location /Applications/x.app
3- The dictionary feature doesn't work when from the drop down menu unless I manually start the dictionary application.

My main problem though is updating applications. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!!

This might seem really obvious but I thought I would make the suggestion anyway!

Are you sure you dragged the Applications folder back to the right spot?? It should be in the Macintosh HD folder.

Just a humble thought!

Pete, if you do something like that and notice it immediately you can go to the Finder's Edit menu bar item and select "Undo" (Command-Z). This only works if you haven't done some other Finder operation. Also, moving the Apps folder into the trash, then back might have goofed up some permissions: do GetInfo on your Applications folder, you should have Read & Write permissions, but the actual owner should be system, group admin (click the Details triangle to check). Just for luck you could still launch Disk Utility and repair permissions. That might fix your problem.

There are two Applications folders possible, one at the level you see when you open the hard drive icon (the same place where the System and Library folders are) and a second one in the user home folder. Your main Applications folder should NOT go there--if that's where you put it, then that is the cause of your problems. Move back to the base level of the drive. When you open the drive it should look something like this:

Applications
Documents
Library
System
Users

The exact list of folders can vary, depending on whether you have Classic installed or have added other folders you want all users to have access to.

Nope. However, you can create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem's fixed. If so, then you have corruption/confliction within the original account, usually between preference files, and that's something you'll have to resolve.

If the problem persists, I strongly advise updating to 10.4.9, using the COMBO updater (10.4.3 is a bit long in the tooth), then run Software Update to get any missing pieces. Before you do that, read the posts at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=887915&tstart=0 That's simpler than reinstalling your applications.

Once you do that, see if the problem persists.

Thanks everyone for your help, this seems to have solved it. I'm so relieved to have my Dictionary working again. My software update technically might not be working correctly but a restart or a pref. trash will probably fix that. Thanks once again!

Francine, sorry I couldn't mark your post as helpful because there seems to be a limit to how many posts you can mark as helpful. I was going down the list and ran out...
