DVD Studio Pro Crash at Burn

All of a sudden, DVD Studio Pro has started crashing after building a DVD right at the moment it starts to burn. I have successfully burnt many discs previously. I have tried using completely different assets in brand new projects, video and still, so it can't be a specific asset. I've tried different menus. I've tried using DVDs from different brands (-R and +R). I've tried deleting the DVD SP prefs. I'm at a loss and pulling my hair out!

Fritz:

Did you try building your project in your hard drive before burning?

If you can build and testyour project (VIDEO_TS) in your drive, you can try Creating Disc Image in DVDSP (from www.kenstone.net site) and burning with Disk Utility and/or Toast to check if your burning problems stay there. You could have a media problem.

I will try that, though it will be a workaround solution, and I'd still like to know what has gone "wrong" with DVD SP. I will post the result of this test.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that I also tried while logged in under a test user account.

Could also be a hardware problem. Have you tried a different drive? Different burner?

Paul:

My suggestion of burning from outside DVDSP is oriented to isolate the burning process from DVDSP, then he'll know if he can burn or not . . . if he cannot burn from outdide it could be a media and/or burner issue.

Okay, Silal, your suggested test points to a problem with the burner or OS.

I built the project to the hard drive, created a disc image of it and tried to burn it with Disk Utility and the exact same thing happened – it crashed within a second or two of clicking "burn".

I don't think it is media related because I've tried two different brands with the same result.

Thanks for the help. Any suggestions on isolating the issue from here?

1-The disk image played ok off the hard drive-T/F?
2-If true then use disk utility to burn a disc of your local files. I think you have done this to no success.-try CD for some files.
3-If this works you are validating the drive to make CD's (check this with another machine in terms of having said CD mount and you can copy files.

If the CD works then repeat the same with DVD.

If DVD does not work then the burner may have a failing laser, dirty, or some other failing component. I have resisted the use of "cleaners" but maybe a little dust is getting in your way

I was able to create a disc image successfully, which will burn to a DVD on another Mac, but I still can't burn any DVD or CD on my machine using DVD Studio Pro, iDVD or Disk Utility.

Complicating maters, I connected our Primera Bravo II CD/DVD duplicator to my machine, and I get the same result – crash at the moment it starts to burn – so it doesn't seem likely that it is a Superdrive failure, but rather an OS problem.

I recently did a clean install of the OS without reinstalling all of my applications. Is there possibly some file that is missing or needs updated?
