imac g3 blueberry- HELP

Hi all,
I own a blueberry imac g3 which is currently running on MACOS 8.6. I am trying to set it up so that my mum can use it for email (including viewing photos attached to emails) and maybe skype.
I am having a lot of trouble figuring out what to do and I am very confused!

My problems are:
1. Although Internet explorer is happy browsing through web pages, it sometimes stuffs up the placement of everything, so you have to search using the arrow keys to see where the text is (and the text is sometimes on top of other text)
2. It will not let me access email programs such as Hotmail or Gmail - an alert reading "The identity certificate uses an unknown signature algorithm"

How to fix this? I am happy using 8.6 but have tried to update my operating system - but am unsure how to do this properly.

Please respond with advice as I am feeling very frustrated!
Thanks so much in advance!

What is the processor speed? If it is 350 or higher you can upgrade to Mac OS 9.1.x or 9.2.x with full retail CDs. If she really wants to view photo attachments in emails, I'd recommend Mac OS X 10.3 and then update to 10.3.9 with Safari 1.3.2. But in order to install Panther, you'd have to update the Firmware to 4.1.9 if it's a slot-loader while you are booted in Mac OS 9.1.x or 9.2.x. If you want to stay in Mac OS 9.2.x, Netscape 7.2 would be a better browser than Internet Explorer since it is more advanced than the obsolete Internet Explorer for Macs.
