Older version of Apple Software Update cannot be removed

I'm trying to install the very latest Itunes for windows. About 50% through the install my computer locked up due to a driver error. I don't believe this was related to the itunes install. It was just coincidence. After I rebooted into windows I tried to install Itunes again. Now I get an error right at the beginning of the install process that says the older version of the Apple Software Update cannot be removed. It bails out of the install process immediately now. I can't figure out how to get Apple Software Update uninstalled now. Manually removing it via the control panel does not work because it can't find the old AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi file. Help!!

Used the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove Apple Software Update

I'm having the same problem. Tried the cleanup utility and i'm still getting the same error message. It's saying it cannot remove older version. If i try to open itunes it says that it cannot open a file that is not installed on the computer. it was working fine until i tried to upgrade. any other suggestions?
