Hi shp26

Had you been doing anything else that could have affected Safari, download any updates for instance?

Try this: With Safari in the Applications folder, select it, and do Command + i to open the information box, where you will see at the top the icon currently for safari.
Click on that icon and do Command + X.
That should return the icon to the compass.

Next, open Disk Utility, found in Application/Utilities, and click on Repair Permissions. Wait until it is finished. Then Quit Disk Utilities.
Go back to Safari and drag it to the Dock where it should stay.

Open Safari, and in Safari > Preferences, select Reset Safari.

Hopefully all of that will get you back on track.
