Port Forwarding Issues With Aiport Extreme

I'm going to try to be as specific as possible with this issue because I've searched quite a bit around the internet and have not found a suitable answer to my question. It's in regards to Port Forwarding on the new Airport Extreme (Wireless N).

I've successfully been able to open one port, 51111, for the bittorrent transfer protocol. All other attempts to open lower ports (namely ports 5190-5200 and 4443 for AIM file transfer) have been unsuccessful. Here's my setup thus far. In Airport Utility, I've set the connection type to DHCP to obtain an IP address from my provider, and then set it to manual so I can alter some settings, like so:

Next, under the DHCP tab. I create a DHCP reservation for my computer under the internal IP 10.0.1.18. I do this using the MAC/Ethernet ID obtained from the Ethernet Tab in the Network Preference Pane (this computer is wired to the base station):

The settings appear to be correct because I can still connect to the internet and my Network Preference Pane shows the correctly assigned IP (.18):

My next step is going into the NAT tab and making sure the "Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol" is on:

The final step is setting up the port mapping, which seems to work erratically. In essence, I click add to enter a service an port (or range of ports), select Personal Web Sharing (this seems to be the only one that works for my purposes), enter the port number under both "Public TCP Ports" and "Private TCP Ports" (it won't let you continue by simply entering one, but they don't necessarily have to match), click continue to name the service, and then finish. It looks like this:

User uploaded file

If I add more than one entry to the same Service (from the drop down menu), none of the ports seem to open for whatever reason. I noticed that depending on the service selected from the drop down menu, the Service type at the bottom changes to names like http.tcp (for personal web sharing), afpovertcp.tcp (for personal file sharing), etc. I'm assuming the problem must lie within these files.

You have the option not to select any service and just enter the ports and correct IP address, but this doesn't seem to work either. Like I mentioned earlier, however, I was able to open port 51111 using the settings pictured above but no other ports at all. The Network Utility verified this:

I checked my Console and found some interesting errors that may have something to do with it, but I'm completely stumped at this point:

For the sake of keeping things simple, I've turned the Firewall off at this point. I'm just trying to get these settings working and then I can move on to setting the rest up. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks In Advance,
Andrew

Hi darkdriving -

This probably isn't the answer you're after, but it's worth a reply just in case. For our port forwarding duties we use the very nice dynamic port forwarding utility Lighthouse. It's $13 shareware and it works super with the AEBS. I first got it when we still had our funky old Belkin router, which had the worst port forwarding ever.

Perhaps you should check it out. It makes all our port forwarding issues non-issues. The support from the developer has been tremendous. (We haven't needed support using the AEBS, but we did with the Belkin.)

Terry: Thanks, I'll look into it. $13 would be well worth the price if it gets rid of these headaches.

ctomer: I'm using the Network Utility found in Applications > Utilities. I never opened ports 427, 548 and 4111 using the Airport Utility. Perhaps they were opened by the system when I enabled things like Personal File Sharing and Printer Sharing

darkdriving, if you do try out Lighthouse, send the developer an email for his tips on using the program with the new AEBS. He has a couple of screen shots that make it very simple to set up. Possibly he's incorporated this into the help file, but since there's so many different routers he must be compatible with, he may not have included that info.
