OS X Tiger install CDs

I just bought an old iMac on eBay, which has only a CD-RW drive. It meets the requirements for running Tiger, and I have also CD-ROMs of Tiger 10.4 from vendor. He has done a clean install of the OS, taking it back to 10.1. I just wanted to know if I have all the CD-ROMs (I have 4) before I go ahead. Can I get any instructions for the install from CD, or are they the same as for the DVD version? Should I upgrade the RAM from 256MB to run Tiger (it's an iMac G3-600MHz system). I was planning to do an erase and install. Should this work OK?

You need a Tiger retail install package and in order for the Tiger retail install package to be on CD media requires using Apple's Media Exchange Program after purchasing Tiger on DVD media to exchange it for CD media at an additional $10 expense. Are you certain this is what the vendor did?

I'm not sure how many discs are included with the retail install package on CD media but I'm fairly certain it isn't more than 4. The media label is black with the retail install package and the instructions are identical but instead include more than one disc.

If the seller re-installed 10.1 via an Erase & Install, an Erase & Install with Tiger will be required to install Tiger over 10.1.

256MB of RAM is the absolute bare minimum requirement for Tiger so you need to upgrade to 512MB at least but I recommend installing as much RAM as this Mac can accept or that your budget allows.

Thanks, Allan. It seems that the vendor has obtained the CDs by exchanging the DVD with Apple via mail-in and payment of the appropriate fee. Thanks for youlp and advice. For future, it may be useful for you to know that the media exchange programme for Tiger closed in the UK yesterday, 19 March 2007.

The iMac has 256MB on 1 DIMM, so I was envisaging whacking a 512MB DIMM in the free slot and seeing how that goes, though the iMac takes up to 1GB. Should I really max it up? Any idea where to get the cheapest RAM in the UK, anyone? I seem to be coming back with prices of approx £60 online for 1x512MB DIMM for iMac G3-600, slot-loading

Interesting! A pity we are not allowed to speculate as to why! (Although not hard to guess!)

Do NOT just get 'the cheapest ram'. Only two brands worth considering: Crucial and Kingston. Both give a lifetime warranty.

I use different ram to you, but last year I paid around £100 for a 1GB ram from Kingston.

Google for either. Both sell direct. Possibly some vendors can beat their prices, but not by much. Good ol' Computer Warehouse if worth a try!

Hi, I hope I can tag along this question; mine's similar. I'm asking for a friend who also bought off eBay, an iMac G5 (Tiger), absolutely loaded, tons of apps . . . but no disks of course. She has forgotten her password. I'm helping her update and make a backup of her drive, but of course we can't do anything without the admin p/w. I read that an original install disk 1 can be used to reset the admin p/w. Should she get just disk 1, or I guess it's better to buy the complete set of install disks. We have an Apple store in town. Or can the disks be ordered online? Your advice? Thanks 😉

The install package for a particular Mac model and build is not available online nor at your local Apple Store but your local Apple Store should be able to help you order a replacement install package for this iMac G5 model and build.

Your friend needs the entire install package for a number of reasons.

The install package includes a Hardware Test.

If your friend needs or wants to perform an Archive & Install or an Erase & Install keeping all additional software that shipped with this Mac when new.

If an individual application included with the install package is accidentally deleted.

Running Disk First Aid repair.

Unless it was sold at a price that I couldn't pass up, I would NEVER purchase a used Mac unless the install package that shipped with the Mac when new was included along with the install package for all additional software included.

Be careful getting the cheapest ram out there! Although 512 will work (and it will be a whole lot better than your current 256) I would really consider going for a gig. Your computer will thank you, every day!
