Personally, I consider buy a notebook on eBay to be pretty risky. But I'm averse to risk.

You could buy from amazon.com and perhaps avoid shipping and sales-tax. And amazon often has rebates, too. YMMV.

Or buy a refurb from Apple. Apple generally doesn't charge for shipping, but does charge sales tax. I'd consider the refurb way less risking than eBay, since you will get a real, 1-year warranty.

Just MHO. And I'm assuming you are in the US, since you don't state. Obviously shipping and tax info will be different in other countries.

When I was looking for a powerbook a year or so ago, I checked into Ebay. The number of scams, especially when involving high-value items like laptops, turned me off the entire experience, so I went back to the old standby, and bought a refurb. I've never bought a new Apple computer, and to be perfectly honest, don't know why anyone would. The refurbs are cheaper than new(usually by at least $200USD or so), but are in like-new condition. You get all the documentation, software and hardware that would come with a new computer, just in a plain brown box. Also, in my experience you're more likely to get a more sound computer when you purchase refurb, because any problems that came up initially have been fixed with new parts. Also, keep this in mind- If it seems too good to be true, then it most likely is. No one selling legit on Ebay just has to get rid of their computer so badly that their willing to take an $800 dollar hit unless the product is damaged, a lemon or in most cases, fake and simply a scam. At least when you buy from Apple or Apple Refurb, you know exactly what you're getting when you order.

Also... wait until you get your refurb before you purchase additional memory (if you're ordering a refurb with 512MB). It's not uncommon for Apple to ship reburbed machines with more memory and/or larger hard drives or bettery processors than what they have advertised. What they advertise should be considered the "minimum" you will get. This is not always the case, but it seems to happen very often.

I too would recommend that you stay away from eBay. At least with an Apple refurb, you know you are getting a full warranty and you don't have to worry about the condition or problems that something you get from eBay may have. There is also the possibility that something from eBay may be stolen. There are plenty of honest sellers on eBay... but there are so many scams that it's better to be safe than sorry with a purchase like this.
