shows up right between store and playlists under the library on my screen.
when I first set up apple tv everything seemed to go ok, but it would not show up.
I finally went into the apple tv menu and factory reset it.
I had to configure the network again, but i showed up fine and all has been well since.
if you have an ipod plug it in and you will see it show up as a device also.
good luck
My ATV appeared in my devices window for setup and everything works but now when I turn on my sync-ed computer it does not appear in the devices window eventhough the music streams to the TV. I would like to sync my photos too, but I cannot get the ATV to appear in the devices window anymore.
Are you sure you are streaming to the TV and not just playing content from the Apple TV? Does your iTunes music show up in the Sources list on the AppleTV? If so, is the text grey or white? Grey text indicates a lost connection.
Check to see if you wireless network still shows up on the Apple TV. If so, then check the status of the wireless internet sharing on your Mac. I have found that I need to turn off the Firewall in order for my Apple TV and my computer to automatically reconnect upon waking.
In my case, when I first checked the Apple TV network connection this morning, it showed one bar of signal strength. After turning off the Firewall, I got 5 bars on the Apple TV and it appeared in the devices list on iTunes once more.
I am not real happy about having the Firewall off all the time but I have not found a lasting solution yet. I can turn the Firewall back on and all seems to work fine until the next time the computer wakes from sleep and I begin the network reconnect process. Not a perfect solution but rather a pragmatic one for the time being until I find the right Firewall configuration.

I had this problem too.
The "Devices" list doesn't show up unless iTunes detects the Apple TV or iPod(s).
I have two subnets in my apartment, wireless SSIDs "allan-private" (which is encrypted, and 802.11b) and
"allan-open" (which is not encrypted, and 802.11g).
I have the Apple TV connecting via SSID "allan-open", because it is a higher speed wireless network.
My various laptops seem to default to the other wireless network. And they randomly pop back to the "allan-private" network, after a while.
If you are streaming content, or which to see the Apple TV in the devices list at that moment you won't see it -- because the Apple TV must be on the same subnet as the linked iTunes devices.
I was able to fix this with some network reconfiguration.
See System Prefences -> Network -> Airport
"By default, join: PREFERRED NETWORKS."
Then order the list of Network Names in the preferred order.
I found the devices list under iTunes/preferences, yet my ATV is not listed. ATV DOES see iTunes store through my home E-net, either wireless or wired.
Any ideas on how to get my local iTunes to see my ATV?
In my case it initially worked fine - It showed up in Devices. Then I tried it without syncing so reset - and then decided I wanted all my photos and so turned syncing back on - still no problems, then wanted to add a different iPhoto album in so tried to re sync, but now nothing I do causes the Devices menu item to appear in iTunes nor the Apple TV in the Devices list. It seems not to be finding the Apple TV. By the way I've already made sure that 'Look for Apple TV' is checked.
I've reinstalled iTunes, rebooted numerous times, restarted the network. Turned the apple TV off - even pulled out the power cord and also restored Apple TV to factory settings and then re entered my Network Password etc. It plays Movie trailers fine - no problem.
I had the same problems with mine--ATV was able to play trailers without a problem, and the Airport Extreme I was using was definitely recognizing the ATV (the MAC address showed up in the connected users list).
I was able to get the ATV to show up in the devices list (which indeed only appears if there's an ATV or iPod connected) when I disabled my firewall. There are some Apple support articles that show specifics and step-by-step processes for doing these, which I can post later if you can't find them.
Here's the kicker--Apple's built-in firewall protection can be completely shut off, but some Windows and third-party Apple firewalls can't be. I don't know about Windows, but if you use NetBarrier for Mac (even the most current release), you will have to completely uninstall the program using the NetBarrier installer. Even set with "no restrictions", the ATV uses so many atypical ports and connections that NetBarrier gets in the way. I am sure this would be true for other firewalls as well.
Once you can get the ATV to show up again, then go through the tech articles to see how to configure your firewall for the ports needed to allow ATV to keep functioning with the firewall on.
Did you get an answer to this question? I have the exact same problem. Everything is set up perfectly. It streams itunes with no problem, but now I can't sync pics as it has never showed up again in a "devices" list.
