Updating from OS X 10.2 to 10.3

first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!

Your computer is compatible with all versions of 10.3.x but might miss a firmware upgrade. You have to buy the retail full install CDs first. Then follow this procedure: 10.3 Panther Upgrade: Decision tree+checklist.

The move from Jaguar to Panther or to Tiger is an upgrade, which involves purchasing new software disks. You can download updates once you have the basic software installed, but the initial installation is from disks you have to purchase. See Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?.

To install Panther your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Panther.

You will need to purchase the Full Retail version of Panther. Please note that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided since they are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and will therefore, very likely, cause problems during or after installation. On the legal side, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which states

This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...

You can purchase universal installer Panther disks, guaranteed to install, from applerescue.

If you already have Panther disks and are unable to install (I couldn't tell for sure from your post), please be sure that they are Full Retail Version.

Welcome to the discussions.
When upgrading from an older Operating System you must use all of the Software updates from 10.2

However you will need a Complete Retail Version of 10.3 to Upgrade.
There are several different Apple Resellers that offer complete 10.3 Retail Versions. There is a difference in those offered with specific machines they are different and will not work. Thats the reason for the Full Retail Version.

Here's some info, in addition to the responses previously posted.

If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some additional online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.

As posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.

As advised in Gulliver's Checklist..., Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.

If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider purchasing and installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
