I have been having trouble recording a podcast. Im doing a project for my school, and 3 different recordings have gotten messed up because of errors I get when i go back to play it. There was an error code that said "this file type is not supported" as soon as i opened it up, then it says that an audio file is not found, then one invalid region changed, then gargageband found one audio file in 8 bit format. This format is unsupportive and cannot be played back. So all these errors keep me from listening to the recording. I dont understand how it doesnt work when theres nothing that I'm changing, its done on the same computer, and within a couple hours. once it finally opens up, theres sections from the podcast completely missing, some say file not found, and if i even try to play it, it just gives me the warning saying one or more files were recorded in 8 bit format. Somebody please help me, my professors dont know how to fix the problem, and still do not give me any credit because of the technology issues im having.

You need to convert the files to 16-bit, 44.1K files before dropping them into GB:

if I change it to 16 bit in garage band before I record will it work? because I remember seeing something about that, but I figured I would ask before I wasted my time again

I don't know what this means. You can't change the format IN GarageBand.
Where did these files come from?
Ok i thought I could change it in garage band. The files Im talking about are each recording, after the project is finished and I save it, then I cant play the whole thing back because it says that one or more recording were recorded in 8 bit format, which i dont even know how that happened in the first place, and when garage band actually opens it up, theres files, or recordings, that are completely missing, i lost about a 2 minute section that was completely gone. then after that, it appears that theres still recordings after that, but where the recording is under male voice for instance, it just says "file not found" in the box where the spikes from my voice would normally be.
Oh I just realized what you meant by this:

Ok heres the problem though, all the recordings are being done on garage band, were using a microphone to record the podcast right on garage band, so Im not dragging and dropping recordings right into GB

What kind of mic? What is it plugged into?
its a logitech AK5370, but my first assignment for this class the microphone worked, during the first assignment the first time we recorded the podcast on a macbook and we got the same warnings about the 8 biut format, then it worked the second time we recorded it with the mic plugged into the usb port with a mac with a tower, im not sure of the model of the computer. now for the second assignment we have recorded two 8 minute podcasts, using the mic, and both of them had the same 8 bit problem.
Open Audio MIDI Setup utility and make sure the Mic is set to 44100 and 16-bit
ok where do I do that though? in garage band? or the mac? Im just not very familiar with them
thanks, now all I can do is hope this works
Hang, quick question.....
As you know, Logic is my DAW of choice right now but every once in a while, I crack open an old GB file to play with it. One of the times I did it, I had a thought, "What would happen if I imported a 24 bit file?" I bounced (the 'Send to iTunes' of Logic) a track in 24 bits and dragged it into GB. Worked fine. Closed GB and checked the Package Contents of the file and the dragged in file was still 24 bits. I didn't know you could do that. I still don't have an interface, so do you know if you can set your interface to record 24 bit files in GB, or does GB automatically only record 16 bit no matter what?
Any thoughts?

I have had this same error recently occur. I recorded one complete podcast on my ibook, transfered it to my desktop and finished post production and everything was fine.
Episode 2 recorded fine. When I tried to transfer it to my desktop I got all the same errors.
I am wondering if 10.4.9 was the cause. Possible reset some sound settings in the Audio Midi Setup.

It's been 2+ years since I tested this, I seem to recall that GB still wound up with 16-bit files, but I definitely have not checked GB3.
