iTunes Not Working (Unknown Error -200)

After a power outage I rebooted my computer and clicked the iTunes icon. An error box appeared reading "The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred. (-200)"

I then downloaded the latest version of iTunes (7.1.1.5) and tried reinstalling but a little after half way through the installation another error came up. It said "Error writing to file C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.Resources\zh_CN.lproj\iPodServiceLocalized.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory."

Please help, I desperatly need my iTunes :[.

hmmmm. the first one (the -200) is typically caused by a problem with your QuickTime. (on 7.0.2.16 and higher versions, it shows up as an "itunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration" message.)

but the second one is a problem with a language resource amongst your itunes program files.

those are typically caused by damaged files, and damaged files can also cause QuickTime problems. so first let's try running a chkdsk over your C: drive.

does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? if so, does the itunes 7.1.1.5 install go through properly? if so, does iTunes launch properly, or do you start getting an "audio configuration" message when you try to launch it?

I somehow got around that issue and iTunes now gives me a "iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration." message.

okay, we'll first try swapping out your QuickTime. try the instructions from the following document:

I went through chkdsk and reinstalled the standalone Quicktime, working great now, thanks. Could this be an early warning of disk failure, or just regular disk issues?

to be perfectly honest, i'm not not sure. my suspicion here is that the damage was caused by the bad shutdown with the power outage. but whether or not it's going to cause a progressive problem, or if the chkdsk nipped it in the bud ... time will tell.

it's probably a good idea to back up your data. and perhaps in another week or so run another chkdsk to see if any additional damage has appeared.
