Maxtor One Touch is not recognized

I have recently upgraded from OS 10.3 to OS 10.4.9 on my G3, and now the G3 does not recognize my Maxtor external hard drive. I have tried connecting with USB, and with Firewire 400. As soon as I connect the drive with firewire, the G3 displays the black window, saying that I must restart the computer.

This Maxtor seems to be fine, and works normally when connected to my Mac Pro, or when connected to my Airport Extreme via USB. Is there some incompatibility of the 10.4.9 and the G3?
