Yes DVD

Hi all, I just had Christmas 1947, an 8mm film my dad made converted to DVD by Kodak and YES Video. The DVD seems to be unloadable for further editing. Is there some way to convert these files to a formate I can get into iMovie? Thanks, Bill

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...

for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:

* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
* connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter

none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

Ok, I may have the answer already but I am just a little dense and way behind the curve on this. I see lots of format terms in the suggested locations above, but I do not see a reference to the files that are on this DVD. There is a Folder called "VIDEO_TS", that is chuck full of ".LAY", ".BUP", ".VOB", ".IFO" files. There is a "AUDIO_TS Folder that is empty…silent movie.
The thing that burns me is there advertizing package Digital Scrapbook stuck on the DVD. I can't really see where it is. I want to get rid of that for sure.
Good lord who was in charge of making this user friendly?

Hi Bill - here is what QuickTime Kirk (an acknowledged expert on these forums) has to say regarding your problem:

"Install this new software and quit and relaunch QT Player (if running).
Open QT Player and then insert your DVD. Quit DVD Player if it starts.
From the "File" menu of the QuickTime Player choose "Open File". Navigate to the DVD and its VIDEO_TS folder and click OK. Your file should now be playing in QuickTIme Player.
QuickTIme Pro can't edit or export this file with audio. It can't be imported into iMovie until it is converted.
Download and install MPEG Streamclip (free).
Open MPEG Streamclip, navigate to your DVD and choose the VIDEO_TS folder. Click OK and it will open in Streamclip.
Choose "Export" and pick DV Stream. Wait for the conversion to finish. It will make a new file (you name it).
Open iMovie and "Import" this new .dv file and make your edits, etc. "

Does that help?

Bill,

There is a Folder called "VIDEO_TS", that is chuck full of ".LAY", ".BUP", ".VOB", ".IFO" files.

The VOB files (VOB = mpeg2) are the ones with the audio/video you want to convert to DV format for editing in iMovie.

If you use Mpeg Streamclip you'll need the $20 Quicktime Mpeg2 component installed.

The Digital Scrapbook software is PC only and is of no use to you on your Mac (unless you can run windows on your Mac)

I would go back to Karsten's post where he provides several solutions with links.

I listed in recommended order:
stick DVD into Mac
launch application (e.g. DVDxDV)
select DVD
hit button
done...

.. no need to care about the - indeed complicated - file structure of a videoDVD...

PS: the AUDIO_TS is NOT empty, 'cause you have silent movie.. this is only filled, when doing SuperAudioDVDs.. the audio is muxxed inside the .vob files... but again: NO need to know or discuss that.. just use the apps, many offer a free trial ..
