iTunes shuts down after I open it.

I just picked up my computer from the repair shop because it needed the fan replaced because it was overheating and I had no viris or spyware protection. I tried opening iTunes and it opens fine, but after about 10 seconds it says

"Software Application has encountered a problem and needs to close."

The it says

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library.
Runtime Error!
Program: C:/programFiles/iTunes/iTunes.exe"

Why is this happening?

yes, let's re-enable those.

okay, let's check on your QuickTime now. (iTunes needs a properly functioning QuickTime in order to work correctly.)

try launching your QuickTime. does it:

(a) launch perfectly fine?

(b) fail to launch with an error message? (if so, what does it say?)

(c) exhibit other peculiar behavior? (if so, could you describe it for us?)

After i open quicktime, it seems ok until i try to click on a button. then it says "one moment please...connecting to itunes music store" then a notice pops up and says "The webpage you are viewing is trying to close. do you want to close it?" this is so frustrating. if i have to reinstall itunes, how do i save my music into a folder so it doesnt get erased?

hmmmm. that's suggesting that you might be having a problem with a firewall blocking QuickTime access to the internet.

in your firewall settings, is QuickTime being allowed full access to the internet?

sorry for the delay, Kate.

hmmmmm. okay, let's try swapping out your QuickTime for a fresh copy.

head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.

Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.

1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).

2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.

3. Open Program Files.

4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.

5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.

6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.

7. Restart your computer.

next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.

switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.

go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".

if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

if it does, quit itunes, and try launching it again.

do you still get a successful launch, or do you go back to getting the error message?

Hi - I was having the exact same error message. I tried reopening iTunes and restarting my computer (neither worked) before I searched this site. I was so relieved that I wasn't the only one having this problem! I didn't try any of the things the previous posters listed since they didn't work for you, but I downloaded the newest version of itunes, and now mine seems to be working. I hadn't downloaded a newer vesion in a while since it seems to be every other week that there's a newer version.
I don't know if you have already tried that, but so far it's been working...
Good luck!

i'm sorry Kate, i missed your previous post. lost track of you twice.

this one was very weird. we had a sudden spike of reports of it, and then it went away ... my guess would be something like an update to folks' security software that wasn't liking QuickTime ... which was fixed by a later download for that package. but that's just a guess at this stage.

Allrighty, I finally managed to fix it. All it needed was surgical removal:
Uninstall iTunes
Uninstall all iTunes plugins
Get into your Program Files directory, and kill the iTunes directory
Uninstall Quicktime
Get into your Program Files directory, and kill the Quicktime directory
Download Windows Install Clean Up, and remove any iTunes and Quicktime entries
Go to Start->Run->enter %appdata%->find the Apple Computer directory, show now mercy, kill it entirely.
In the explorerwindow, open the Extra->Folder options and enable "show hidden files and folders".
Go up 1 directory, find Local Settings, in there, find Application Data, destroy the Apple Computer directory
Get a fresh Quicktime installer (preferably standalone) and install Quicktime
Get a fresh iTunes install and install iTunes

Fire up iTunes and hope for the best. It's the only method that has worked for me.

iTunes shuts down after I open it.
