NO NAME folder in Finder

Every time I open Finder there is a folder named "NO NAME." I click the eject icon and nothing happens. I can drag it to trash and it disappears from Finder but it is not in the Trash folder.

If I click on NO NAME a window pops up stating "The volume for NO NAME cannot be found."

What is this? How can I make it go away?

Selecting Eject has no effect on a folder. Think of a folder as a big envelope sitting on top of a desk or in a desk drawer. 'Eject' is used for things such as drives you might add to you computer like an ipod or usb flash drive or volumes such as music cds...

I'm curious to know, what is inside this mystery folder? If it's empty, after you drag it to the trash, empty the trash. Finder menu>Empty Trash.

Also, wondering, does the folder have a little arrow on it? If it does that means it's an alias. You'll want to locate the original and toss it. Select the offending folder while holding down the Control key - from the pop up window that will result, select Show Original.

The folder icon is blue and has no arrow. It appears in Finder in the left column immediately beneath Macintosh HD.

To the right of the folder icon is printed NO NAME (in upper case). To the right of NO NAME is the eject icon, the triangle above the straight line. When moused over it reverses gray for white.

Regardless of whether I select Documents, Application, Mcintosh HD, etc. the folder icon and NO NAME remain.

Having already emptied Trash there is nothing there except the same darn NO NAME in the Finder View of Trash.

Also, in the Finder View of Trash "Empty Trash" is grayed out.

There appears to be nothing in the mystery folder.

I examined the desktop and found nothing suspecious there.

I dragged a file to trash, double clicked trash and Finder shows the file I just trashed (and the cursed NO NAME folder)

Did you mount a camera or some kind of memory card? NO NAME is the default for unnamed volumes mounted. Do yo still have a card or camera attached? If so, make sure you don't have a file open on it. Since you have tried to eject it, it may be "stuck." I haven't heard of this in a while, but I've seen it before.

I think I ended up using Terminal and deleted it from the /Volumes/ directory, but you may be able to achieve the same thing with Disk Utility. See if it shows up in DU's disk list. If it does, try to eject from there, or unmount it.

This thread has some discussion on the matter.

You may have fixed it. It may have just been a phantom left behind, but if not, it is still mounted. You just deleted the sidebar alias, not the volume. Go to Finder, View Menu, Go to Folder... Type in /Volumes/ and hit return. If it is still there, it is still mounted. If it is gone, then it was just something left behind that didn't get removed when the volume actually unmounted. Also, open Finder Preferences, click the sidebar tab, and make sure Removeable Media is still checked.
