I just bought a brand new 46" Samsung LCD TV with 1080p (model LNT4661F) and hooked up my tv to it with a MonsterCable HDMI cable. The picture is perfect, but there is absolutely no sound. I've made sure there weren't any audio settings on the TV that needed to be made in order for HDMI audio to work. I've also exchanged the HMDI cable. I've even exchanged the tv! I still have the same problem. Audio works fine when using component cables. Anyone else have this issue? Is there something I'm missing?

I have the exact same problem. This past weekend I bought a Samsung 32" 780p LCD TV (LN-T3253H) and an Apple TV. I connected them up and got both video AND audio through the HDMI port.
I felt that the 32" was too small so I returned that TV to BestBuy and bought a 40" Samsung 1080P LCD TV (LN-T4066F). When I plugged the Apple TV into this set I only get video but no audio through the HDMI port. The only way I can play audio is by using the component audio connections out of the Apple TV.
I took the Apple TV to the Apple Store this morning and verified that the HDMI port is still functioning properly (ie. both audio and video played at the store).
I guess that there is some issue with the Apple TV and these new Samsung 1080p LCD TVs.
My HD cable DVR box plays just fine using the HDMI port (I get both audio and video).
I checked the Samsung website but there are no firmware upgrades for my TV yet.
The Apple TV box appears to be up-to-date as well.
I have a Samsung as well that had the same problem. This is what I did to fix the problem.
Turn the TV off and then turn it back on.
I know that sounds funny - but it looks to me the sound is set up when the TV is turned on, so if you plug in the HDMI cord while the TV is on there will be no sound. At least that is the case with mine (46" Samsung 1080p - don't know the model # but I just bought it two weeks ago)
I also am having the same problem w/ no sound via HDMI and a new Samsung LNT5265F. I moved it to another TV and it works. Switched the HDMI cable to the satellite receiver and it works, but when I plug the apple tv in, no sound. Sounds like we found a bug.
Still waiting for a response from Apple. I went to Best Buy last night and had them plug an Apple TV into the Samsung LNT series HDMI port and the audio did not work on it either.
I think it's definitely a bug. Hopefully Apple or Samsung will figure this out and release a fix. Since posting the problem, I took my tv up to Circuit City and they let me plug it into a bunch of their LCDs. Every tv worked except the Samsung that was the same model as mine. I didn't want to wait for a fix from Samsung or Apple, so I exchanged my tv for a Sony XBR, so all is well. Too bad about the Samsung though....it was a nice tv.
Still waiting for Apple to call me back. Called today and got the case number. If you have a Samsung LNT series LCD television and are not getting any audio from over HDMI w/ Apple Tv call and add your name to the case number:
I called Apple today and explained the problem and gave them the case number. They said it is a known problem that engineering is working on. They could not say at this point if it is an Apple TV or a Samsung problem. They also told me to check the Apple TV support page for updates and fixes to this problem.
When I called and talked to Apple about this problem I mentioned that's how I had mine hooked up. I can only hope my mention of a work-around did not become their "fix". Because that is what this is, a work-around, not a fix. The HDMI is all you should need to hook it up.
Seems like e AppleTV works with everyone but the samsung? That would imply that the problem may exist with the samsung tv, rather than the AppleTV. Fortunately there are audio ports which allow you to overcome the samsungs hdmi problems!
It's not the Samsung. If you plug in any other HDMI machine (satellite, bluray, dvd player, etc) the sound works. Just not with the Apple TV. Apple is acknowledging the issue. But for now just use HDMI port 1 and use A/V cables for the audio.
