QuickTime logo with a question mark on it

Some websites i go to show a picture or video instead
a faint quicktime logo with a question mark shows up.
How do I get rid of it and show the picture or video
instead?

I also have the same problem, it showed up after the updating of Quicktime to Var. 7.1.5.

I would hazard a guess and say that those site in which you are now seeing the "?" have movies in too old a version for Quicktime or maybe they've used a codec that you don't have to make the Quicktime move.

Power Mac G5, Dual 2's Mac OS X (10.4.8) My brain tells my fingers what to type. It's not the computers fault.

I have been having the same problem for some time now and it is very frustrating,

I have a iMac Core Duo ... installed Quicktime Pro 7.1.5 ... for my browser I have selected Open Using Rosetta and still I get the Quicktime blue ? on so many things.

I have also downloaded plug-ins.

I just tried my banking website and the ? popped up. And this is a on a new part of their site.

I paid for Quicktime Pro ... why was I suggested to pay for this by Apple and it doesn't work all the time???

I am replying to my own post ... my banking site problem doesn't occur using Firefox so I guess part of the problem is Safari.

This is an Apple bug. Here is a reply I had from Apple when I logged the call:-

Based on your email request, I understand you're having an issue with your podcast appearing as a blue question mark on your iWeb site after updating your Quicktime application. I apologize for any inconvenience this issue may be causing you and I'll be happy to assist.

Apple Engineering is currently investigating reports of podcasts not working after updating the Quicktime software. We hope to resolve these issues in the near future, but unfortunately do not have a clear resolution for the issue you reported at this time, as it is currently under investigation.

As a workaround, we recommend viewing the website using a different web browser such as Mozilla Firefox. Firefox can be downloaded at the following URL:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

i have the latest version of mozilla firefox installed along with quicktime 7.1.5....but still, this same problem persists....its quiet frustrating to not be able 2 watch any video's online....
anyone's got bright idea's then please put them forward!!!

I have the same problem. Can't access video on YouTube etc. However, the problem doesn't seem to occur when using Netscape. Give it a try.

I find it interesting that this is clearly a topic of interest since 450 people have clicked on it---significantly more than the other questions on this page---and yet, NO ANSWER.

I have not been able to download Apple trailers. For instance, just went to a link to download the trailer for You Kill Me:

A little button says you have to have version 7 of Quicktime which I keep downloading, since I keep trying to see trailers.

Although I know I've downloaded this software in the past, I'm getting the crazy Quicktime Q with a question mark.

So I go so far as to download Quicktime 7, yet again, then Restart. Try the movie. Still get the question mark in the Q.

What is up with this??????

I'm having the same problem. Just thought I'd add that the new cnn.com website is an excellent reference to experiment on (to Apple techs). They just went to new format and no news clips play for me, just a quicktime question marks (including apparently fot some ads, which I don't mind!).

By the way, I had that other thing installed, flip for mac components for Quicktime or something, which seemed to be required to view cnn news clips before they upgraded their website. (It wouldn't work without it before.) Could this be a factor with the OS update I recently downloaded?

CNN now uses Flash Video and you need to have the free Flash Player installed to view them.
You may also have set your QuickTime settings to try and play Flash content and it can't play these newer formats.
QuickTime Sys Prefs / Advanced tab / MIME Settings button
Under Miscellaneous remove the check mark for Flash Media
Quit and relaunch your browser and try CNN again.

I'm getting it to. Updated quicktime yesterday or the day before, and I'm pretty sure that's what started it. I have flash and this is occuring with flash videos. I have quicktime set not to open flash videos or streaming videos. I've reinstalled flash.

uninstalled quicktime, reinstalled 7.1.6 - still has a problem, even after clearing cache and cookies and restarting. Also has problem after uninstalling and reinstalling flash.

basically just re-install flash... all should be well afterwards

I uninstalled and reinstalled flash - didn't work. uninstalled and reinstalled quicktime, didn't work. uninstalled and reinsalled quicktime to previous version. didn't work. uninstalled and reinstalled flash again. didn't work. uninstalled Quicktime and DID NOT reinstall it, worked.

I had no problems using IE 7 and viewinf flash videos but quicktime doesn't appear to be agreeing with firefox.
