pause/resume/end workout woes

almost every time i try to pause my workout something goes wrong. it says "workout paused. to end your workout, press the menu button." if i press the menu button, it resumes the workout. if i press play/pause again, it used to resume the workout, but today it ENDED the workout every time! so now instead of having a new record distance, i have three short consecutive runs. thanks a lot, apple. i am really getting p.o.'d.

i can't find a way to pause the workout and still keep the music going that doesn't randomly end the workout or make me have to fiddle with the scroll pad and various buttons. it seems like a pretty simple concept.

my nano also tends to freeze a lot with the nike+ chip connected.

yes, all my software/firmware is updated.
