Simultaneous FW and USB external hd operation

I am presently doing the following simultaneously:

(1) Backing up data onto an external USb hard drive

(2) playing iTunes, whereby the music files are located on another external, however FW hard drive.

No problem so far. However, when I try to copy a song from the FW hd to the iMac's desktop, it is only "preparing to copy". Obviously, I have to wait until the USB copying has been completed before it will copy the music file over.

So, why is there no write access to the FW hd while the USB is active?

I'll have to re-enter them I suspect, Miriam.

There has just been a major "snafu" (caused, I think, by a bad cookie) on the boards that was preventing many of us from accessing them properly. Instead of being able to log in many of us were getting a recurring "create new account" message. I eventually managed to log in by using a different user account on the iMac and eventually resolved the problem on my regular account by ditching my AppleID cookie. I was actually intending to post the stuff I posted here in the Level 4 lounge, but I had this thread open too , intending to catch up with it when I had sorted out the other matter. Obviously clicked on the wrong "reply" button!

EDIT - I see the chooks and bats have come back all by themselves!

Cheers

Hi Jurgen, I haven't had time to try to emulate this yet, but let me just get the sequence clear:

1) Backing up FROM iMac internal drive to external USB drive (regular finder copy or using a utility of some sort?)
2) Playing iTunes (with music stored on external FW drive)
3) simultaneously trying to copy music FROM same FW drive TO iMac HD

4) The copy from the internal HD to the FW drive is proceeding, but the copy of music from the FW drive to the iMac HD is just sitting there waiting.

5) You can play the music and still copy to the USB drive.

It sounds as if the internal drive is too busy being read to have time to write (which seems strange unless , perhaps , you are using a utility that takes over control of the internal HD processes pretty completely) . I'll try and emulate the situation and see if the same occurs for me.

Nope, nothing being copied from internal to FW drive. However copying from internal to USB drive works during music play.

Mmm,

No problem doing this on my system, Jürgen, although the copy of the music over FW to the internal HD was a little slower than it would usually be I think.

Regardless, while booted from the iMac internal drive, I could happily simultaneously:

- copy (using drag and drop) a 19 Gig folder of movies from the internal HD to the external USB drive

and

copy a music file from a fw drive to the internal HD

while

- playing a music file located on the same external fw drive through iTunes. (in my case the iTunes "library" file is actually on the internal HD, but the music being played was ONLY on the external drive. THis, I think, is the only slight difference from your setup, and I can't see how the library file location could make a difference.)

I wonder if this could be related to the bridge in one of the drives (a familiar tale?).

The USB drive I was using for the test is a cheap "combo" drive , connected over USB2 on this occasion. The FW drive was in a high quality case with an Oxford 911 bridgeset.

Not much help, I'm afraid.

Do the directories on all three drives check out as having "no problems" when you run DiskUtility over them? Plenty of space on the internal drive?

Cheers
