.2mg files to ProDOS floppy for Apple IIgs?

I'm resurrecting my old IIgs to play around with, and I'm wondering if there's a way to put a .2MG image file onto a floppy. There's some interesting abandonware out there in the emulator-friendly .2MG format, but I can't figure out how to get that data on the actual trusty ol' GS. I have an old Mac with a floppy drive running OS 9, and it can write ProDOS disk from proper image files (like GS/OS 6.0.1 from Apple's site).

Thanks!

Bill

I don't know of a way to translate between the .2mg format and the diskcopy format. If we could do that, then your G3 would be able to write .2mg disks all day long too. If you can get a USB to Serial adapter (i.e. Keyspan), you can use ADTPro ( http://adtpro.sourceforge.net) to transfer .2mg images directly to the IIgs to write.

I am under the impression that support for the ProDos format was removed at System 8.0. At the same time, 400K diskette support was also removed and support for HFS+ Extended format was added. [I am not trying to pick a fight -- I would be happy to have you prove me wrong!]

Double Density Diskettes use a different oxide than High Density diskettes. Your ProDos system cannot tell the difference, but the data can decay very rapidly on the wrong type of diskettes.

Can your older Mac run 7.6.1 or 7.5.3? what Mac is it?

I spent an hour this morning writing System 6.0.1 GS/OS disks on the Mac OS 9 system using an old copy or Disk Copy 4.2- worked great. As a test, I plugged a DD floppy in with only the Finder running and it gave me the choice of erasing the disk in the ProDOS format. No problems!

Cheers,
Bill

ps: it's a beige G3.

I'm also noticing that the site that has the .2mg
files also has downloads in the ShrinkIt format,
which apparently has an expander program for the
IIgs. Perhaps that will be a better way to go?

Not unless you have a mass storage device or some memory attached to your GS. To me, it's just easier to take the whole .2mg image and write that to a floppy rather than go through the intermediary of ShrinkitGS.

I agree with local talking the G3 and IIgs together for file transfer. Once on the IIgs, a utility called Asimov from ninjaforce can deal with the .2mg file. If your IIgs has a scsi card, you can use an old zip drive to transfer files. This works for me.
