Mac keeps going to sleep

I have Mac OS 10.4.9 and my my desktop mac won't stop going to sleep. I know where the sleep setting are and I've turned it off. But that doesn't stop the mac from going to sleep after about as little as 30 seconds. It will do this on all login accounts but won't do it if you boot from the CD.

Is there anyway to fix this without reinstalling the OS?

I'd try resetting PRAM or NVRAM, or possibly the SMC I searched and couldn't find anything similar to your problem--always just the opposite.

You didn't post the type of computer, so here is an article with links to resetting PMU on various computers.

no, it turns on and makes it to the desktop but then goes to sleep. It's not even turning off. It's just going to sleep again and again and again.

just tell me how to turn that feature off... I think I already know it and have done it but maybe I missed something.

There is no setting to have it go to sleep all the time. It is probably something that has gotten out of whack. Those links I posted are directions for resetting various low level memory areas that have a link to the sleep functions. Resetting them may fix the problem.
