Java Cache Viewer gives Bus Error

I am having a problem with Java Cache Viewer (JCV). I need to run an application which uses Java web start. On Tiger javaws is actually to JCV. If I try to launch JCV on its own it tries but fails to launch. If I open the JCV package and double click on the UNIX executable inside it launches Terminal and I see the following:

Last login: Sat Apr 7 12:45:54 on ttyp2
/Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE\ 5.0/Java\ Cache\ Viewer.app/Contents/MacOS/Java\ Cache\ Viewer; exit
Welcome to Darwin!
$ /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE\ 5.0/Java\ Cache\ Viewer.app/Contents/MacOS/Java\ Cache\ Viewer; exit
Bus error
logout

I had the latest Java patch (java 1.5.0_07) and had this problem. I used Pacifist to downgrade to java 1.5.0_06 (since the app I need to run won't run with 1.5.0_07) and get the same error. I tried using Pacifist to extract JCV from the 1.5.0_06 upgrade installer pkg and that also gives this error. Same error with a fresh account so it's not a cache or Preferences problem.

I don't think it's a bad memory issue, I don't see any other symptoms. Most likely there is some file somewhere that is missing or bad. I have run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior but no joy. I might try creating a boot disk from a known good system.

Has anyone seen anything like this or have any idea what is going on?

I tried Archive and Install. That fixed it for new accounts but accounts migrated from older machines were still broken. I went to the command line and ripped out everything with Java (or java) in the name that is under my home directory and copied the same from one of the good accounts. All is now well.

Conclusion: Don't use the Migration Assistant
