Memory issues for G4, transfer memory from powerbook?

Hi- I have an issue where my mail won't launch... I can't use disk utility to fix it, I get the following message Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Error: No valid packages (-9997)
which I cannot decipher, But I have less than I GB left on my hard drive, is that it?
Anyway, can I move the memory from my new macbook ( 2 X 256 ) which I am replacing, to my G4, or is that impossible? I am not very computer literate....
I also cannot empty the trash, is that related? I get the following message; "the operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privelleges for some of the items" This confuses me completely.

Many thanks for ANY help, for any of the above issues...

Mac OS X (10.3.9), G4 powermac, macbook

Hi, Lupe11 -

Someone else will need to help with regard to the permissions issue.

However, if by 'memory' you mean hard drive space, no, you can't move it.

A clarification - "memory" is RAM and includes RAM-related things such as Virtual Memory (for those OS's that use that). "Memory" does not refer to hard drive space.

So, moving RAM from your MacBook to your G4 would not solve a shortage of hard drive space.

Having only 1GB of free space on the drive can cause many problems, including the inability to empty the Trash. OSX needs a fair amount of free space in order for it to perform many behind-the scenes functions; ideally, you should maintain 5GB or more of free space.

In order to increase hard drive space you can remove a lot of files that you no longer need on the drive; replace your present hard drive with a larger one; or add a second hard drive (all G4 tower models are pre-equipped to accept a second internal hard drive).
