Airport Disk Issues

Ok, so I know that there are several threads on similar topics already, but none have helped, so I am posting anew.

Got a new AirPort Express Base Station to replace an older WAP that was giving me issues. I was thinking about it and realized that it would be much more convenient to have my 500GB drive connected to the network so that I didn't have to rewire my other computer every time I wanted to use it. It is a Seagate drive in a MadDog USB 2.0/FireWire enclosure. Works great connected to my computer directly, nice and fast.

So, I connect it to the AEBS and configure to use the base station PW to log into the disk. Works OK the first time, but I can't view any of my files. So I came here to the boards. People suggest reformatting the disk, so I did (after copying 60GB to my MBP. After reformatting I connected the disk back to the AEBS and figured that I would transfer the files back via the network (good way to test speed I thought). Well, that didn't work, didn't even copy one file before I got an error. So I connected the drive back to my computer and transferred the files back.

Now I connect the drive to the AEBS and my computer automatically prompts me for the PW and connects to the drive. Again, can't see the files. Further digging here says put the files in the "Shared" folder. Did this and it works.... ONCE... I wanted to see if this was a fluke, and of course it was. I unmounted the drive from Finder and tried to reconnect and the Airport Disk Utility sits beach balling and my AEBS resets itself. Once the AEBS comes back on, the disk mounts, but no visible files and I can't copy files to it, I get an error that says the file name is too long.

Reboot AEBS and try again, this time same drill, try to mount the disk and the AEBS resets, now it is sitting with a flashing amber light, Airport Utility says "Disk Needs Repair" This just doesn't make sense to me.

I usually have no problem getting all things Apple to work, but this is a real bugger. By all accounts of what I have read here on the boards, i have done everything right and it should work, and yet... There have also been a bunch of people who have said that Apple tech support was really not helpful, and I don't really want to sit on the phone waiting to talk to a tech who probably knows less than I do. So I would appreciate any insight you guys might have cause this is going to drive me nuts. I mean this is a great feature, but it should work or they should fix it darn fast!

I've had no problem accessing data from my drive, although I'm curious about what I keep seeing about a "disk mounting" or the "icon appearing." The only place I've ever seen my airdisk is as a network server on the left side of my finder window.

I make sure to name my HD a different name than my AEBSn. (AEBSn is "Living Room", HD is "Library")

Physical base station has a different password than the network. Both Expresses connected to AEBSn have the same password as the AEBSn.

I had to ask Airport Utility to "Show Airport disks in menu bar" the first time I hooked up a new drive to a newly configured and newly restarted AEBSn.

I cleared all the keychain entries for my network, and started all fresh.

I did the *freaking 7.1* update and I got a powered USB disk, and so far it seems solid.

Just throwing out a few things that have worked for me. I've got the day off tomorrow, and I'll be following this thread, good luck!

I Still consider this action mounting. Sure it is a server icon as opposed the the USB disk icon you get when plugged in directly.

This I have done.

Did this too.

Didn't do this, but it shouldn't have an effect.

Have the newest firmware for my AEBS and a powered USB drive.

I have part of the day off today so I am going to play with it.

Ok, here are some new developments. I reformatted the drive again (MacOS Extended Journaled) and connected it to the AEBS without putting my files back on it. I set my AEBS to use accounts for airport disks.

I was able to mount the disk and start to copy some files over to it, then encountered an error. I don't remember what the error was and I haven't been able to recreate it. In any event, when I cleared the error all of the other items that I had copied to the drive disappeared. They were still there taking up space, but I couldn't see them.

I unmounted the drive and then tried to reconnect. When I tried to connect again, the AEBS reset itself, and when it finally came back up, the drive did mount again and I was able to see the files I copied there. So I picked another group of files to copy over and this time a got an error that the filename was either to long or contained a character that couldn't be displayed, but the filename was "07.jpg". After I cleared this error, the copy did not continue, but my files didn't disappear. Now I could not copy any files to or from the drive because I got an error that the filename was too long.

At this point, when I try unmounting and remounting the drive the AEBS still resets itself, and I can't copy files to or from.

I'm afraid I don't know how to find out that information. I did a quick search in support forums and Google, and didn't find anything.

Something that sounds unusual in your description is "The AEBS resets itself" when you plug in a disk. Here's what I'm picturing from your description: the base station is sitting there with a green light, up and running. You plug in a USB drive into the port, and the indicator light starts to flash yellow and the AEBS goes through its startup cycle.

Is this correct?

Ok, well that is unusual behavior, but I think one of the issues in our crossed thread above there might be the culprit. Try a powered USB enclosure and see what you come up with.

I had a little 80g drive for my iTunes, without an external power source, and it gave me constant grief. I've got a powered 250g that's working fine. I just did a test file transfer, and transferred a gig and a half in about 20 minutes, not bad for a g-network.
