https://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer ??????????

I split this question into two parts. One the history as I know it and, two the question arising from tying to do something about it. Although I am not sure how I managed to (yet I did) dump my ability to view video and sound on web sites like U-tube and Myspace etc!

1. I downloaded a mime type player a site said I needed and it turned out to be for classic so I appzapper'ed it to get rid of it and its associated files.
I moved on and then found the web site videos and music on site's I belong had either been replaced by little blue boxes with question marks in or where there was a music player it was just absent!
Drop down menus were keen to inform me something was missing and were to get it!
So I realised I boobed big time and am still unaware of just what I had done, and even more so about how i go about restoring what I had been more than happy with, if I knew what it was i would restore it. This is were I need a bit of exchange of knowledge!

2. I am recommended in UTube or My space to seek out Adobe Flash player download. And the site recommends for my PowerBook G4 running 10.4.9 OSX:
Version: 9,0,28,0
Platform: Mac OS X
Browser: Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, AOL, Opera, and Safari
Date Posted: 11/14/2006
Language: English

After running the installer the software opens the browser Safari and goes automatically to http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/index.html
and proceeds to state in the drop down menu:

Safari cannot find the internet plug-in.

The page “Macromedia - Flash Player” has content of MIME type “application/x-shockwave-flash”, but you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page:

https://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer

Do you want to open the page?<

So i could just go round in this loop and never get to load what I downloaded?

So am I going about this properly or am I out by a mile?

powerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi

I'm wondering if you have multiple Flash plug-in files in your computer? Enter Flash Player.plugin in the Spotlight panel. Post back with results.

Regarding the ? in Quicktime, it is possible your Quicktime settings were changed. Make sure in the Quicktime Advanced Panel in System Preferences>Mime Settings, nothing is checked for Miscellaneous.

Back to Flash -

Before you install the new plug-in, uninstall the older one. You can do this with this Adobe Uninstaller.

After the new plug-in is installed (assuming this time you'll get an affirmative response on the Adobe site)

Thanks for the response. I am having withdrawals ha, not seen a video all day!
OK. First I went to Quick time and checked all boxes Or made sure they were except miscellaneous! and then I used Spotlight; spotlighted Flash Player.plugin and just got a Document: /Library/Internet Plug-ins created 12 October 2004 modified 7 April 2007. And a picture which looks like a white and ghostly leggo brick. That seems to be all there is, just the record of a past.

Ran install and had exactly the same effect as i first described, dog chases tail!
Its odd as it 'says' it should work yet it do'nt for sure at the moment!

Hello mbro88,

Welcome to discussions: )

Safari's task bar under Help menu- Installed Plug ins which version
do you show to have installed:

Shockwave Flash

Shockwave Flash 9.0 r28 — from file “Flash Player.plugin”.

MIME Type |..........Description| ...........................|..Extensions

application/x-shockwave-flash |.....Shockwave Flash.........|swf
application/futuresplash Future |......Splash Player .............|spl

The above is what I have on Aluminum Powerbook, running os 10.4.9
Without going to the Macromedia site to download this is just what it has been updated to via the os.

You must follow the steps in Macromedia instruction to the letter, and even then it can be difficult, you are not the first to have a problem there.

Anyhow check your installed plug ins, under help. Let us know.

Dear Eme'~[)

First may I apologise for posting out of line with this list. I see the error of my way here and am reformed!

I do appreciate your help here. I have looked for the item below, as you said, in -under- help. It probably DID exist yet no longer resides there.
So the answer is not I do not have this set of plug-in's loaded I spos!

So I am letting you know!

Also I was quite good (I think) at following Macromedia instructions, in as much as I un- installed a couple of times to make sure i had nothing I hadn’t probably anyway. No halm in rinsing the mouth out, and then downloaded what they said was for my system, as yours on your Alloy.
What happens is: I load it and it tells me its doing it to 'Tobias', My named hard disk, then finishes the installation by opening my browser, Safari, and its own instruction page, only to drop down a menu telling me I need to download what I just downloaded to get to were I was, what with it telling me to download what it was i just downloaded. Woof!

One other thought - make sure all the web content
boxes are selected in your Safari
Preferences>Security panel. If the first box were
unchecked, you would have a problem with QT.

Dear Eme'~[)

Just looked and of the four there are only the last Block pop - up windows is unchecked (not ticked). If I tick that then I will not get ( I presume) the notes telling me I have not got what it takes to do what i want. Then I would never know, ha!

This is a brave face i show thee, for behind is a much vexed soul suffering from lack of video input and interwebing music boogy!

I heard you say that a download of OS X provided you with the said Mime items. Maybe ...

I await response before acting irrational and fiddling myself into a worst mess!

PS. What is QT?

Apr 11, 2007 1:25 AM in response to mbro88

Just noticed the QT came form the BIG island. Not Eme'~[) !
Well I am new and these different time zones give me jet lag!

And as an aside; Since a dear friend of mine move to big island, Big islanders keep popping up kind of intriguing regularity, coincidence; or is it a sign, ha!

Do you feel refreshing my OX from some place may work?

Here is the fix and jolly good it is as well. Sent me by Diane on Big island Hawaii. The trick was to uninstall just incase the last time did not work, then repair the permission's. The permission's repair did it!
I now have the lastest player!
So do I award myself some points or what, ha!
Anyway my real thanks to those that helped me along the way here. Identifying and confirming thoughts was good!

Safari and YouTube videos - I have had the same problem, the video's were replaced with the Quicktime icon (grayed out) with a large question mark over it. So were ads on most sites.
The strange part of this is that both my computers had the same problem. With my son's help, and the suggestion here to look at the mime menu under advanced in the Quicktime system pref area, I clicked on all the options, tried a YouTube video, still no luck. Then I went back and clicked on 'use defaults' tried the video again and the problem is gone. I can now play the videos. A few weeks ago, I syncronized the two computers together to back up the hard drive of the Mac Book Pro onto the iMac. I believe that somehow in the process, the settings were changed during the process. Perhaps not, but the problem is now fixed on both computers. I hope this may help someone else here.

1st, WOO HOO!! Thanks for the good news, very happy to hear you solved it.

Before you install the new plug-in, uninstall the older one. You can do this with this Adobe Uninstaller.

Running Disk permissions repair is necessary & can solve many problems.
I see in previous posts that you had also trashed Safari and re-installed,
Did you run disk permission repair before & after the install? If not that is a must, though some users feel it necessary after only & not before.

See this user tip Travis A.'s Regular Maintenance/General Troubleshooting & this one http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607640

Well my logic went: appzapper must have eaten all connected with the now reloaded. That is that although I had zapped a classic application (plug in Mime)
It just was hungry and ate it all up!
So as soon as I established via your help's here that Safari was actually not responsible it was to late. I have done the reload.
Once I had done that then I knew Safari was not connected with the zapped.
You all identified it as the mime and flash player. I followed the instructions on the uninstall and download to the T.
Nothing.
Cried for help.
Daine came through with a site that interfaced with a problem fix before going on to load and or uninstall. This told me about the permission's fix. Then the rest is history!!
