safely uninstall Airport Extreme software in order to do a reinstall ?
I've messed up my encryption so although I have connection between my iMac and my Airport Extreme, I cannot connect with the Internet via my cable modem. I've tried various approaches, but I think I could solve it by uninstalling the Airport Extreme software and reinstalling it again-- does this seem feasible? If so, do I simply drag the icons out of Utilities and dump them in Trash?
The state of your wireless encryption is unrelated to the problem of the AEBS(n) being unable to communicate with your cable modem. No need to try to uninstall anything; besides, all you can easily uninstall is the Airport Utility by dragging it to the trash.
Use Airport Utility to check that you have properly configured the AEBS(n) Internet connection. For a cable modem, this is usually like this:
Connect using: Ethernet
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
Connection sharing: Share a public IP address
What do you see on this panel for your Internet IP Address?
If the settings are OK, then power off both the AEBS and your cable modem for perhaps 10 minutes, then power up the cable modem, finally the AEBS

I see the IP Address is listed as 24.196.111.128 for the Base Station. the connection says: Ethernet (WAN) 00:16:cb:c2:bc:c0. The configuration is "using DHCP"-- the airport status is still extremely strong; but still no connection to the Internet. I've tried turning off modem and turning off the Airport Extreme, but no changes.
Any other ideas?
Thanks for your help!
I finally got a phone link with an Apple Support tech guy. He walked me through a reinstall of the software, and now everything works just fine--clear connection to the Internet!
Thanks for the help!
While it won't remove the software from your computer, it will be inactive. Once you rerun the install CD, that new version will be the primary one. If I am reinstalling software, I don't empty the trash until the new one is installed.

No, it may cause the installer to happily reinstall the software but the OS X's AirPort (wireless) ability will be unaffected y deletion of that utility.
