Newbie needs Outlook Express Help

Hello, I just have a quick question... I just bought an iMac computer, and I want to know how i can import my old e-mails ffrom my PC. I had a PC before, I have never had a mac until now. I have never been especially good with computers, and now I am completely confused, this is so much different from the PC. So... if somebody could help me out, I would appreciate it a lot. My old e-mails are on an outlook express account.

Also, I know that this probably is impossible, but is there any way to import my old favorites/bookmarks list?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Email. Have a read of this article (link) regarding email transfer.

Bookmarks. On the PC in Internet Explorer go to File > Import and Export... > Click 'Next' four times and then 'Finish'. This produces a file called 'bookmarks.htm'. Transfer this file to the iMac.

To provide any more specific guidance we'd really need to know what iMac and OS you are running. Go to Apple menu > About this Mac to find the OS and Processor speed.

cheers

Well transfer the bookmarks file on a USB drive. You can network the machines to transfer files but you don't need to.

Since my first post I've also found this application (link) that transfers email from MS Outlook to the Mac.

It's worth putting the specs of your Mac in your profile<(click)</font> (see mine for an example!).

You've posted in the iMac (CRT) forums which is for the old coloured G3 CRT machines. You have an iMac (Late 2006) and should post in the Intel iMac forum in future as you'll get better quality advice for your particular set-up! 😉

No problems...

In the good old days iMacs used to come with AppleWorks however all you get now is an Office and iWorks trial.

Personally I use Microsoft Word because I got Office very cheap when I bought my Powerbook. Given Office runs into three figures I'd advise trying NeoOffice (link)</font</a>. It's free and fully compatible with Office 2007 for Win (unlike Office 2004 for Mac!) I use NeoOffice on my Powerbook now and you can't beat it for the price.

That worked great, thank you very much. One more question though... I have some old board game CD-ROMs. Is there any way to put them on the Mac? I try putting them in the CD slot, and a little icon appears on the desktop, but I can't get the games to open or anything? Is it just that my discs ae outdated/not compatible with mac, or is there something that I need to be doing? Thanks

We are here for the answering of questions!!! 😉

Firstly a cheeky off-topic tip: Hover the mouse over a word and press ctrl,  and d together.

AFAIK Tiger's mail doesn't have any stationery. In October the new version of Mail will have stationery although I believe all the backgrounds will be stationary.

Try asking in the Mail forum (link) and see if anyone's got any tips.

Actually try this:

  • Open TextEdit.
  • Type in the text: <html><body bgcolor="2b8e57">
    Hello</body></html>
  • Save the file to the desktop and name it file.html.
  • Confirm that you wish to use the extention .html
  • Double click this file to open this in Safari
  • Choose File > Mail Contents of this Page. This will load a new message in Mail with the html you previously had loaded up.

The 2b8e57 part well this is a code for a shade of green (the colour of my links). For this number you must have 6 hex digits (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, or F). The first two represent the amount of Red so FF0000 is Red. The second pair represent the amount of green so 00FF00 is all green. The third pair represent the amount of Blue such that 0000FF is plain blue. By varying these hex numbers you can get any one of 16,777,216 colour combinations.
