Hi
I had my nano swiped yesterday (dammit). I was wondering if the serial number could be tracked to see if it has been used in itunes on another computer? Or is the serial number unique only to the model, not individual units?

Thanks in advance for any answers, peeps.

No, it cannot. Report it to the police and include the serial number.

The serial number is unique but as mentioned there is no way to track it.

    Thanks guys

I suspected as much- it has already been reported stolen and all that, but I wondered if thefts could be reported to apple or something. I guess not!

    Dear thanig,

You have posted that Apple has a procedure to note stolen iPods. This is not the case. Please read our Knowledge Base document titled "How to report lost or stolen Apple product?". You can find this article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300066.

Thank you for your concern and your support.

    Kind regards,

Apple has no procedure to note stolen iPods. There is no foolproof, formalized way to recover gadgets like ipods.

It is the case that you may call 1-800-MYAPPLE and they will ask for the serial number of the ipod. They are available to document your service and product concerns.

It is the case that you may also check into how your ipod was purchased. Some credit card policies offer theft protection for items you purchase. Ipods are replaceable and resold on auctions all the time.

There are companies that track gadget theft. To use it you have to take precautions before the gadget is lost or stolen. Good luck and thanks for your question.
