Macintosh HD Icon Missing!!!!

Did you check your Finder Preferences from your Finder menu? In the "General" tab, there's an option to show or hide icons on your desktop like hard disks, DVDs, connected servers. (In some applications, using command+comma will open the Preferences dialog.)

Updating the OS should be done "carefully."

Backup first.
Repair your boot drive. First with Disk Utility, then with Disk Warrior.
Clean the system and library cache folders.
Do a Safe Boot.
Apple the updates.
Don't use the system while it is downloading and updating.
Use the combo update and stand alone versions.
Repair Permissions after update.
Leave all FW drives off has usually been good idea.

How many drives do you have? which drive was it????

Is the name of the drive there but no icon? If so, do a get info on the drive.See if you can click on the area where the icon would be. Does it make an outline? If so, pick a icon from the web, do a get info on it, edit>copy it, go to the missing drive icon and edit>paste it.

I had the same problem. Macintosh HD icon was missing from both the desktop and the sidebar (in Finder window)

I checked/unchecked everything pertinent in Finder's Preferences.

I downloaded ad installed "Path Finder".

After opening Path Finder, I Command-Clicked (or right clicked) the Hard Disk icon in the left pane of Path Finders windows (under volumes), and selected "Get Info"

After that, I unchecked the box "Invisible"

I restarted, and the icon was back on my desktop and back in the finder.

I have no idea how it became "invisible" in the first place.

Path Finder fixed the problem. Something caused my Hard Drive icon to become invisible over the last few days. Don't know what.

I have the same problem, suddenly invisible Macintosh HD. I checked the name doesn't have .Macintosh HD. Spotlight will find it but it wont appear in the sidebar or on the desktop. It seems that Path Finder will allow you to make it visible, but where can I get Path Finder please.
