outgoing mail on Juno

I switched my ISP to Juno & have a problem with e-mail. The Juno e-mail program works but the Mac's own mail can't send - I get the message "Sending the message content to the server failed". Connection Doctor says at the top "Mail was unable to connect to the internet" but status says the connection was successful! Juno said the problem was with Apple but deleting & reinstalling the mail program (& files) had no effect while deleting & reinstalling the Juno program fixed the problem until I logged out - when I logged back in it recurred. Has anyone else encountered this problem & does anyone know how to fix it?

What Juno program are you using?

Sorry to tell you but deleting and re-installing the Mail application rarely if ever resolves any problems with the application so this was a waste of your time and effort.

In addition - since your Tiger install package does not include 10.4.9, after doing so you need to download the 10.4.9 Combo Update and re-install 10.4.9 to make sure the Mail.app is current as of 10.4.9.

Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below for the .Mac SMTP server.

Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.

If this doesn't work, the problem lies entirely with Juno which is your new ISP. The only thing that has changed is your ISP since the problem began and of course Juno takes no responsibility.

If this doesn't work, select/use Juno's SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account.

You shouldn't need any Juno software in order to connect to the internet via Juno and more often than not, ISP provided software causes problems which isn't required to begin with.

If you are able to send messages with your Juno email account and SMTP server, select/use Juno's SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account.

This indicates Juno blocks the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network (or not provided by Juno) regardless what an underpaid and/or under-trained Juno tech support person tells you.

You're right - internet access works without the Juno program but that didn't solve the problem.
Tests run: logged off, deleted Juno, reinstalled Juno, logged on, logged off, deleted Juno, logged on - no effect
logged off, deleted Juno, reinstalled Juno, logged on, activated mail program, closed mail, logged off, deleted Juno, logged on - no effect
logged off, deleted Juno, reinstalled Juno, logged on, sent e-mail (it worked - is there any chance sending a test e-mail to myself would cause a problem?), closed mail, logged off (tried using both Internet Connect disconnect & Juno disconnect, no difference), deleted Juno, logged on - no effect (couldn't send e-mail)
Is there any way to update Mail without downloading the entire Combo update (8 hours- ouch)? (Mail is the only thing I reinstalled)

No way to update Mail only when any updates for Apple applications are included with major OS updates.

Are you also accessing an email account and SMTP server that is provided by Juno with Mail and if so, are you able to send messages with this account?

If yes to both, select/use Juno's SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account or with any email account not provided by Juno.

Although my ISP does not block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network as long as the SMTP server is authenticated (such as the .Mac SMTP server) but I use my ISP's SMTP server to send messages with my .Mac account when connected to my ISP at home.

Juno gave instructions to set up the Mac's mail program so I have been using Juno's server. I tried changing the Mac mail program back to att email (and logged back on to my old att account to make sure the mail program was working) but that doesn't work on Juno - it says "The connection to the server "postoffice.att.net" on port 110 timed out." when I try to get mail & when I try to send email it goes directly into outbox. I changed it back to Juno & now it doesn't seem to even get e-mail.

Mail seems to be getting mail OK. I did run an additional test: Deleted Juno, reinstalled Juno, logged on, sent e-mail, logged off without closing mail, deleted Juno, logged on, problem recurred.

Something strange is going on with posting on this forum. The "no" button is already marked as a default under "Has your question been answered?" but when I click on preview it keeps saying there is an error because I didn't give an answer unless I click on no anyway.
