Does Apple TV support H.264 CABAC?

Hi!

http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html writes:

H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps,
Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps
(maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540
pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

H.264 Main Profile specified, that CABAC must be supported:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264

So does Apple TV really support CABAC or only CAVLC? In this case Apple TV implements only baseline or extended profile, not main.

best regards

Seems to be accurate from everything I've read. iTunes won't allow AppleTV encoded video that's not CAVLC. That Wiki page you linked to has this regarding Apple's QuickTime encoder and decoder

"The encoder conforms to Main Profile. The decoder supports Baseline, Extended, and most of Main Profile."

Since there's actually a QuickTime engine in the AppleTV, this probably applies.

Yes, the Apple TV can play files with CABAC. I use the following settings for Apple TV.

x264 (codec)
854 x 480 (resolution)
3000 kbs (video bitrate)
48 khz, 192 kbs (audio bitrate)
CABAC
Adaptive B-Frames (2 B-Frames)
Referenced P-Frames
