Error code 709--CoreAudio driver

All of a sudden this error code has appeared and I can not get an audio output from the built-in sound nor thru my iMic interface. The option offered with the error message is to continue, but that doed not change the results--which is no sound. Searching for "CoreAudio driver" does not give me any results I can work with. Opinions and suggestions are solicited.
