Hello – I recently deleted, on purpose, a bunch of photos in order to clean up my library. I deleted them and emptied the trash as normal and everything seemed fine. The next time I opened iPhoto, the space they occupied was there, along with the file name, but no image. HOWEVER, here is the kicker: this only happened on certain film rolls, not all of them. Any thoughts…? Thanks.
This type of problem typically occurs when someone uses the finder to tamper with the innards of the iPhoto Library folder. In you case, I can't explain it. This isn't going to be pleasant but you might need to do the "manual rebuild." Details are here:

i did the "auto" rebuild before with no change. that manual rebuild looks like more work than i care to delve into right now. if i go back and re-delete those ghost images, then things seems to be okay. either way it will be a royal pain the !@#. thanks for the tid-bits of help.
okay, not to beat a dead horse here, but this iPhoto 5 is one strange program. NOW, after deleting photos, AND empting the trash, ALL the photos I deleted are back, right where they used to be. Has this happened to any of you? I think I'm going nuts here. What a pain...!
