Bluetooth: Not Available -- Hardware or software fault?

I have the "Bluetooth: Not Available" problem on my MacBook with BT going in and out like a fiddler's elbow. I have tried all the fixes posted here and none has worked. At first it was only a minor inconvenience as I had no BT devices. I worked around the no sleep when BT unavailable problem by using the Deep Sleep widget, which put my MB to sleep even when BT was unavailable. But a week ago a relative bought me a BT mouse as a gift and I would like to be able to use it.

I have always thought this problem is most likely a software issue, mainly because I have seen the same thing on G5 desktops, and have heard that it happens on PBG4s. However, I now think this is a hardware issue.

I have Windows XP installed on my MB and thought I would try my mouse with that system. I reasoned that if the problem is software-related it should work OK under Windows. Well, the mouse was detected OK and worked for about 30 seconds but then it vanished just like it does under the Mac OS. Nothing I tried would find it again.

My warranty expires in 2 months and I would like to find out for certain whether or not my hardware is at fault.

I do not want to be without my MB if I can help it (I was without it for 2 months late last summer due to RSD) but I would like to have a reliable BT function.

Does anyone out there agree that the fact that this also happens under Windows means it is more likely to be a faulty BT module than a software issue?

For the record my BT has switched between available and unavailable 5 times whilst writing this! It is now stuck at unavailable.

Well, I picked up my repaired MB this afternoon (just 3 working days turnaround -- not bad). They replaced the whole logic board because, the engineer informed me, they had had better success with this than replacement of the BT module only.

So far so good, but I've only been using it for a couple of hours. Hopefully this has done the trick. I will report back in a couple of days, unless it goes wrong again, in which case I'll be back immediately!

I had this problem and sent it for repair. It tooks more 20 days for the BT module to be changed.

However, random "bt not availabel" error still appears though most time it works fine. I have a bt mighty mouse, but I was feared to use it because the first time "bt not available" problem happened after I purchased and use it. What a waste.

I used to feel lucky that many common faults does not happend for my MB. Now I have started to doubted the quality reputation Apple has been boosting.

Shall I send my MB for repair again or wait for Apple's official sollution?(probably a firmware update)

I have the same problem. At first BT came and went as it pleased, starting today it does not come up at all. This all started for me with the upgrade to 10.4.9 - almost to the day!
I have done all of the things listed including the battery management update. I do not have one of the problem batteries!

I've just started experiencing this problem as well. Mine started when I paired my new Verizon Blackberry 8830 to my black Macbook to take advantage of its EVDO connection to the Internet. (BTW, as long as BT stays functional, this technology works great!) I also use a BT Mighty Mouse.

I've already had the battery and motherboard replaced in this laptop, but I can't say for sure that the BT module was part of that maintenance. I've had my Macbook for just short of a year and I'm very glad I purchased the Apple Protection Plan for just these types of incidents.

Shutting the Macbook down and then powering up seems to fix the problem and make BT functional. If, however, I try and reconnect my phone with the Macbook, the BT will eventually fail.

As a note, when BT fails, System Info will show that Bluetooth is not present and the Bluetooth icon will not display in System Preferences.

I'm curious whether the addition of my phone was simply coincidental to the start of my BT problems, or whether it is unrelated. For what it's worth, when I don't run the phone or access its configuration in Internet Connect, everything appears to be stable. As soon as I fiddle with the configuration of the phone in either Network Settings or Internet Connect, I can get the BT to fail.

Also, if I don't change settings at all and just use Internet Connect for EVDO from the phone, it will eventually make BT fail and become unavailable. The only way to fix it is to shut down as I described above.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks.

BocaBoy

I have had my MB back for three days now having had the logic board replaced to cure my BT unavailable issue. So far everything has worked perfectly with BT remaining constantly available and stable.

I also had a new logic board fitted last year (for the RSD problem) so this is my 2nd replacement. It seems to do the trick though and I would urge you to pursue a further repair as this does not appear to be a software issue.

Good luck!

Couple of Questions, I have the same problem.

1. Does everybody get the USBF: 1493.499 AppleUSBHubPort: Port 1 of Hub at 0x7d000000 reported error 0xe00002ed while doing set feature (resetting port) Message?

2. Has anybody with a Macbook that is out of warranty had the problems repaired? If this is hardware, it seems to me like this is a design fault?

3. I happened to have a USB BT dongle lying around which I am now using instead of the inbuild BT (mightymouse and keyboard). Does anybody know how to disable the internal BT? Ill use external until I get a chance to argue with Apple.

Thanks
Adam

Hello,

to all readers of this thread
Here is my latest info to "Bluetooth not availabe" problem.

1. Repair try : bluetooth modul changed -> no sucsess but the quantity of this failure was lower than befor

2. repair try : change of logic board -> no sucsess seems to be worser than ever in the moment

For the first repair I have waited 3 weeks and for the second repair if have waited 4 week. That means I have been nearly two month without the mac book and I am going to live for another 3-4 weeks without it for the next repair try.
I´am completly feed up with this procedure. I will not blame the apple dealer but the way how apple handle quality problems. Because of the amount of people which have the same problem I believe that some apple technician knows the rootcause of the problem. And there must be a reason why apple don´t spread the information of the real rootcause for this probem. Let´s wait and see.

Kind Regards

Stephan

Just an update, the beginning of May I had my bluetooth replaced. Everything worked great, than 2 weeks ago it all started again. I brought it in and he had it for 4 days, in which it never failed (of course), so my hardware and software tested fine. Tonight I brokedown and purchased Apple Care, the person I spoke with never heard of this, he ended up speaking to a bluetooth specialist who had me do a bunch of tests and concluded that it is a hardware issue and needs to be replaced. They did find it odd that I would have 2 go but should it happen again to call back because they will need to investigate further.

I will keep everyone updated.

Well everyone, I said I would report back on this and so here I am. After having had my logic board replaced 6 weeks ago (my 3rd, if you include the original) everything seemed to be fine. Bluetooth worked without any failures until two days ago. Then, just after I upgraded to 10.4.10, I had my first 'Bluetooth: Not Available' occurrence, and now it has just happened again. At the moment it cycles from available through unavailable and back to available again in a matter of a few seconds but I have no doubt that the situation will worsen and that eventually bluetooth will be unavailable most of the time as was the case when I took it in for repair. My warranty expires in a couple of weeks time so I shall be taking it in for repair as soon as I can get to the service centre.

This is a very dissapointing state of affairs, especially as my MB also suffered from RSD and had to be repaired for that last September. My guess is that there is a design fault with either the logic board or the bluetooth module. Whatever the reason for this fault I have decided never to buy a revision 1 Mac again, which is a shame because I have happily done so in the past.

Oh well, here we go again. More time without my computer, which I use for work, and the possibility that it will still fail sooner or later even after the next repair. Will let you know what transpires.

I've got the same problem and I tried everything. They changed my BT module, but I still have the same problems. I hope Apple will fix this soon (if they are able too) because I'm starting to loose faith in my little macbook...
If I pay 1200 euro's for a product it should work as expected, especially when it's mac!

I'm now convinced this is a design flaw, either in the the logic board or the bluetooth module. Given that I have had the same fault after having both of these replaced would suggest that there is something intrinsically wrong with one or the other.

I would hope that Apple will resolve this issue and retrofit all effected MacBooks free of charge, as we have goods that are not currently fit for purpose.

I am also having the same problems! Random forced shut downs and also the "Bluetooth unavailable" and not sleeping thing. This is the first I've heard about the bluetooth problem being connected to the not sleeping properly thing. I don't use bluetooth much, but it's all the combination of problems I'm having and I shouldn't be having any of them. I guess I'll be visiting the nearest apple store soon to have them address the probable hardware issues I'm having. Thanks for the input, everyone. I'm crossing my fingers on this. I sure hope I'm not one of those people who needs to have their computer fixed multiple times. I got this mac to get away from such problems. Very frustrating!!!!

Sorry, can't offer you any solution, but I've got the same "Bluettooth: Not Aviable" problem as mentioned above, since using OS X (10.4.9). I hoped updating to OS X (10.4.10) could solve this error, but after downloading the update, the problem still continues when using my wireless MightyMouse. So just one more question: could it really be a hardware problem? Maybe it is rather a software problem, because this failure seems not to depend on temperatur, workflow or other "physical" influences, but indeed, I'm no expert in computers (and therefore I bought a mac). Anyway - I hope Apple will give us an answer as soon as possible, cause its very frustrating indeed.
