    i don't see any point lamenting about OSX & drivers here. the problem is also apparent when running under WinXP. further, all the fixes and restarts just may or may not set the device to a point when it works occasionally but this is the same as that it works & fails during run time or while the MB is sleeping (aka suddenly trying to wake up). other devices macosx products don't seem to have the problem. hence, it is MB specific and clearly something in the design of either firmware or hardware if not both. though on former i would presume we already would have an update for a fix.. so? push apple for a final motherboard version which fixes this once & for all.

    Yes, I tend to agree. It really does feel like hardware problems now. But even if it is somehow software related, then if those of us having this problem keep on Apple about this, eventually they're going to have to take a look at that Appledefects wiki and realize that working bluetooth is somehow beyond the grasp of many Macbooks and fix this.

    The only way to keep on them is to get on the repair treadmill.

    I had the same problem here for the last 2 hours..

    What I did to fix the problem was to do everything I have read above but without to solve the problem.
    The last I did and fixed the problem (untill now I'm writing this post) was to unplug the power and leave my macbook to run on battery... and YES the bluetooth was again back!!!

    I have working on my macbook these days always on power so maybe the problem has a connection with that...

    In the hope that some numbers might make Apple respond to this problem, I'd like to add that I'm having exactly the same problem. I had it 4 months ago, got the system board replaced, and now it is back. It is currently away getting fixed, but from the discussion here, I don't hold out much hope for it being more than a temporary solution. We shall see...

    My tech support slipped up a bit, and by that, I mean he was honest and actually helpful. He said, after we'd tried the software equal of trying to fix it by hitting it on the side - by creating a new user and seeing if that didn't make bt behave, and before that there were a few other extra tricks - but he did actually believe me about the other stuff I tried - That he'd never heard of this problem before.

    I responded that it was all over the net, made the Appledeffects wiki, was all over the Apple discussion board, but here's the honest part - He said, "No no, I mean I've heard of bluetooth problems, but I've just never seen it so stubbornly not want to work before."

    Meaning, Apple knows about software stuff that is causing bluetooth to not work.

    That doesn't solve it for people for whom it's so bad that it might just be hardware, but Apple knows. Whether they're bothered by it is a different story, but if a lowly little tech support guy in Finland knows, then the rest do.

    The weirdest thing has happened though. When I updated the smcFanControl to 2.1.2 (not on the developer's page yet, you get it as an automatic update.), Bluetooth started behaving again. The one shouldn't be related to the other, but I guess I'll just have to sit tight for a few more days and see if this doesn't save me the headache of getting on the repair treadmill.

    Well... I have again the same problem with my bluetooth... So I think that is a hardware problem.
    That is verry bad for me because I live in Greece and here we have not any support. There is no Applestore and applecare.

    The logic board of my macbook was replaced in July due to BT problems: BT not available, USB error messages in /var/log/syslog etc. etc.
    After the replacemnt the BT wiorked for two months and now BT started to be unavailable once again.

    I just took my Macbook (latest revision) to the Apple store and they sent it to Texas to fix this problem. They probably won't have it back to me by Monday (which they quoted me on).. whatever.

    I have tried all of the above procedures numerous times over the course of a couple weeks, and I now believe that none of them actually work consistently.
    Today, I thought my bluetooth had permanently failed after trying all of the above procedures. I closed my Macbook and gave up. After picking up the Macbook an hour later and opening it, everything magically worked again. I can think of only one thing that might have changed during this period:


    I would like everyone to see when they have the problem if the bottom of the laptop is at least moderately hot. If we can find no counterexamples, I believe the only solution is to let your Macbook cool down at which point the bluetooth error will go away.

    In addition, it would be nice if everyone could post the average temperature of the notebook when they first notice the bluetooth unavailable. Such numbers would either prove or disprove my hypothesis.

    on mine it doesn't matter. low, medium, and high temperature BT turns on & off..

    My Macbook is back from the service center, but they only replaced the bt module and cable. From my readings across the intertubes, that's not going to work.

    But for now, it works. I've put it through its paces, turning it off and on, doing cpu-intensive stuff to get the temp up there, and then see what bluetooth does - and so far it's all in working order.

    Mine didn't seem temp related in that it could fail at 40C as easily as it failed at 50C. I do have the smcFanControl app, but my Macbook has always behaved itself temp-wise.

    I also use an iLap, which helps any laptop with when it comes to heat. The materials and angle used - it's a no-brainer.

    But the only way for Apple to address this is to get on the repair treadmill. I believe the laws here are similar to other EU countries in that they have to give me a new one if it fails two more times. I don't want a new Macbook. I just want this one to work as it is supposed to. But if there is a problem and there seems to be, companies only look at what effects the bottom line, and Apple is no different.

    Knock-on-wood, my bluetooth keeps on chugging.

    Hurray, that absolutely positively Bluetooth is now just as "not available" as ever and the the firmware update from last night did nothing to help.

    I'll quote Finnish consumer law here:

    "One service is enough for the same problem"

    "...if the same problem repeats itself, the seller should at least switch the product for a faultfree one"

    I'm sure that Apple will adhear to local consumer laws. Yeah right. And what would it fix? If the problem is in most macbooks. So what Apple is saying here is that bluetooth is really beyond their capability.

    Same problem, I'm going to buy an Apple Care and stress them until I get a new Macbook.

    I took my 1st generation macbook (purchased august '06) in to get fixed for the same problem (bluetooth going unavailable & it wont go to sleep mode when closed). They replaced the BT Module & the logic board. It has been working since then until in the end of august it started acting up again but it did it rarely. Now almost a month later, its doing it everyday.

    I took it in last saturday to get it repaired. The macbook was working normal when he was looking at it. The genius bar employee looked pretty confused as to what the problem was. I told him of the previous repair and he said that should of fixed it. He said he would take it in and run tests on it to see if its a hardware problem or software problem. He even told me that if the problem keeps occuring he would recommend I get a new one. (I actually didn't mind. I just want the issue fixed.)

    Fast forward to friday (yesterday). I have yet to receive a phone call but my school is 10 minutes away from the apple store so I decide to just drop by to check. The genius bar employee I talked to last week was helping another customer. So I asked another random employee if he would go check on it. He went to check on it and a few minutes later, he comes back along with, who I assume was the Apple Store Repair Technician, a guy in an orange shirt, quite different from what the regular employees were wearing.

    Anyways, he has my macbook and tells me whats wrong: Nothing. He said he had it running and "testing" for 48 hours straight with nothing going wrong. I'm just thinking to myself, "Right, I'm being delusional about my macbook having this issue. I lost a week without my laptop just so I can fool them. Right.....(rolls eyes). So he ask that he can still do more testing on it or I can just take it home. I decided to take it home. I asked him though that if the same problem occured, should I bring it back? He then said, "There is nothing wrong with your laptop."

    Well I had to go back to work so I couldnt do any testing on it myself. So I waited until I got home in the evening. I opened up RAM heavy and Processor heavy programs to get it running. Well it did seem like it was working fine (the bluetooth did go unavailable for a few seconds when I try to pair it with my iphone, but then it worked the second time.)

    I then left my laptop alone, plugged in to have it charge. A few hours go by and I go to check on it. What do you know, the bluetooth is unavailable. I closed the lid and the sleeping problem is back. Fans still going pretty loud because it thinks its on regualr mode. The vent in the back is not blocked so I dont think overheating is the problem.

    Today I have another appointment at the Genius Bar. Only this time, if he says that nothing is wrong with it, I can call BS on that. I have videotaped from last night and this morning that the problem is currently happening (as we speak). I have the video saved on my laptop so he can see it on iMovie. Clearly shows the date, time, bluetooth unavailable icon, and the sleeping mode problem.

    I'll keep you posted with what happens and what they tell me.

    I can confirm the bug on Linux (Gentoo x86_64) too, this is the relevant dmesg:
    +hub 1-0:1.0: Cannot enable port 7. Maybe the USB cable is bad?+
    +usbcore: deregistering interface driver hci_usb+
    +Bluetooth: HCI USB driver ver 2.9+
    +usbcore: registered new interface driver hci_usb+

    We have to force Apple to recognize this hardware bug so they can fix our Macbooks without giving us too much trouble (it's boring to send it only one time, sending it more times is s**t).
    I got an Apple because of the clamed "superiority" on both hardware and support, was it only a lie?
