iTunes plug-ins

I just bought the JBL Creature II speakers for my iMac, and it's a great improvement. I'm intrugued, though, because I read in a post about plug-ins like Volume Logic and OSS 3D. Do these things really make a difference? I'm not a total audiophile, but if I can get better sound, why not? I don't want to have to be tweaking things all the time, though. Any comments or advice would be much appreciated.

"Better" depends on what you're looking for in your sound. Any such alteration is a "bending" of the original sound, but often such utilities can compensate for the inadequacies inherent in small speakers. I use Volume Logic to level out the variations in the level of the various tracks without having to tweak each one individually. You can also do some EQ alterations that may be more pleasing than iTunes' built-in EQ. But I would probably not use any of the plugins if my system was connect to a high-quality stereo system.

Both Volume Logic and SRS WOW (another sound tweaking plugin) have demo versions, so I'd suggest you download each and try them out for yourself. If you like one or the other, then you can buy it, and if you don't, you can just remove them.

Regards.
