Is imovie HD an upgrade of imovie, what's the diff?

I am trying to find out if I have imovie HD do I even need imovie?
I assume imovie HD just has more features than imovie? What is the difference between the two and is there a need for both?

imac, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

iMovie 1 through 4 were simply called that. iMovie 5 is also known as iMovie HD, iMovie 6 is the latest version.

As Klaus already said, there is no separate HD version of iMovie. The HD just means that iMovie can now also process video clips in HD format, including capturing video from HD camcorders. When you edit a movie, you have exactly the same features available for both HD and non-HD clips.

Precisely why it confuses people that the iMovie forums are listed as

iMovie 4 and previous

iMovie HD (instead of 5)

iMovie 6

Still, what's another tiny hurdle in navigating these foums? 🙂

Imovie was the first version, since then there's been iMovie 2 thru 6 HD. We're waiting on iLife/iMovie 7 to hit the shelves.
