Safari crashes when trying to open

I'm running os 10.3.9 with safari 1.3.2 and it crashes everytime I try to open it. A black box fills the screen and says to reset the computer. I tried reinstalling but the same thing keeps happening. This has been going on for months and I've been using Firefox, but now I want to try and fix it. Any advice?

Hi

Welcome to Apple Discussions

What you are describing is a kernel panic. Please refer to this link and confirm the box you are seeing is the same as appears in the article.

Kernel panics can be either software or hardware related. .

Since this is only happening with Safari as you attempt to open it:

Try opening Safari from another User Account. Here's guidance (Tiger related but also pertains to Panther):

Here is guidance from Apple on how to set up the account. You can ignore step 7 in the article.

Also, on the system preference>Accounts panel, click on "log-in" options. There, select "fast user switching". This allows you to go back and forth between user accounts via an icon in your Menu Bar at the top of the computer screen.

Log-on to the new account and start Safari. If Safari is stable in the new account, then your problem is specific to your regular user account. Otherwise, similar response means a system-wide problem.

Post back with results.

I don't think I'm using any 3rd party add-ons. Here's a copy of my panic.log. Maybe you know how to read it and have a club on how to fix it. Thanks again.

There may be corruption on the HD, possibly repaired using Disk Utility.

Insert your Panther Installer DVD (disk 1). After it loads, restart the system, holding down the C key when the screen turns dark. Once the grey Apple screen appears you can let go of the C key.

When the DVD is fully loaded, select Disk Utility in the Installer or Installation menu (I believe that's where it's located in OS X Panther - in Tiger, it's in the Utilities menu). A window will open showing your HD on the left. Single click on your HD, then select "repair disk" in the lower right of the screen. If errors appear during the "repair", rerun the utility until you get a clean pass. Then quit the Utility and Installer, letting the computer restart.

Let me know if no errors appeared. Otherwise, if errors were corrected, restart Safari.

No success with the Disk Utility program. Here's the message:

Checking HFS plus Volume
Checking Extents Overflow File
Checking Catalog File
Keys Out of Order
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree
The Volume Macintosh HD Could Not be Repaired
Error: The Underlying Task Reported Failure on Exit (-9972)
Repair Attempted on 1 Volume
0 HFS Volumes Repaired
1 Volume Could Not be Repaired

So does that mean my hard drive is totally corrupted? Any other ideas that I could try?

"Keys out of order" is not a good sign. Either, you'll need to reinstall the OS (do you have an external backup of your system?), or you'll need a more sophisticated disk repair program, such as Disk Warrior.

While there is no guarantee Disk Warrior can correct the problem, I have never had it fail me. It's the premier disk repair application on the market.

Another alternative if you live near an Apple store is bring the machine in and have someone at the Genius Bar have a look.

Thanks for all your help. There's an Apple store a few miles from me so I might take it in and let them have a look and I might even look into getting Disk Warrior. If you don't mind me asking one more question, what do you recommend I use for the external backup of my system? I don't have anything backed up and think I should be doing that.

You're welcome.

what do you recommend I use for the external backup of my system? I don't have anything backed up and think I should be doing that.

External backup is the most effective maintenance strategy. I used to use a 160gb LaCie d2 triple extreme drive. Very good drive, always reliable. However, my iMac has a 250 gb drive. Changed over to a 300 gb Seagate drive, which I'm very happy with. You may find some good deals on Amazon or E-bay. Also, LaCie has a "clearance" section where you may find a good deal tool.

For your system, you would purchase an external firewire drive. You won't be able to make a backup with a USB drive. New Intel machines can, but older PPC machines cannot. The key here is creating a "clone" backup on the drive, which you back up regularly, or at least once a week. For the backup process I use SuperDuper. Very easy to use. The initial backup takes about 1 to 2 hours. Subsequent backups, replacing only those files added or changed, takes about 8 to 10 minutes, depending on the size of your HD.
