!HELP! Washed out images

What can I do to fix washed out images caused by spotlights in a theatre. The theatre is dark with a single and sometimes two spotlights on the stage.

Fire your camera operator.<<</div>

Actually the operator was me. I set up the wide shot (a Canon GL2) then I used a Sony DSR-250 for closeups. When I began and did my pre-show testing, the images looked good. The video also looked good through the first several scenes then the theatre staff added an additional spotlight. I usually don't do the actual videoing just small time studio work, so next time what should I do to prevent this from happening? Most of the programs I do are in theatres under these conditions.

In the future....

1) Man both cameras
2) Use Manual Controls
3) lock your shutter at 60... set gain to 0dB (or as low as possible if you need extra gain)
4) activate the cameras zebra stripes
5) control your exposure using the iris

if you don't know how to activate your camera's zebras check the documentation for your camcorders. if you don't know how to use the zebras to judge exposure there is plenty on the internet about it.

Get the best footage you can at the shooting stage. You can do more with SLIGHTLY underexposed footage, as video holds more detail in the blacks than the highlights. Once you overexpose (clip) your video signal there is no information to work with. Just white.

along these same lines, a resolution independant timeline is coming from apple. no need to know anything about what sort of video you're working with anymore or how to create the common denominator, let a piece of software do it as the consumer won't notice.

i sound like a crotchety middle-ager. this is a reason i love my holga and dvx100 on the progressive modes - manual focus, iris and audio. keeps one sharp or in my case points out just how horrible a cam op i really am!

here's something that really got to me and that was the continual demo usage of the auto level/color type control in color. i mean, c'mon, how hard is it to balance the whites and blacks and set a contrast ratio which goes an amazingly long way in repairing bad color from these horrendous auto controlled cameras.
