"Performing Pending Operations..." instead of checking my mail

Mail seems to have a "pending operation" it cannot clear. As a result, I cannot check my email unless I let it run for a couple hours.

When Mail boots up, or when I "Get Mail," The Activity Viewer says:
"Performing pending operations, Copying message..."
"Fetching new mail, Fetching new mail..."
"Checking connections, Checking connections..."

It cannot get through any of these tasks because "Performing pending operations..." cannot close.

What was happening when it started:
I was trying to send a large file (20 Mb). It seemed to get stuck on "Copying message" after "Delivering message", so I canceled it. It went gray but would not clear. I had to force quit. When I rebooted, "pending operation" started.

What I've tried:
* Getting mail through Mail.app on my old PowerBook. Slow, but it came.
* Waiting for MacBook Pro to get it. Takes a couple hours.
* Checking remotely via web browser. Slow, but it comes.

Other weird things with Mail that match other discussions:
* Not clearing "New" mail icon after read.
* Messages appearing twice in the Inbox.
* Taking an unusually long time to "Load message..."
* Getting hung up on an operation (other than "pending operation"). However, I can clear these and re-arrange the task flow by clicking "Stop."

Any suggestions on how to clear these "pending operations" would be great!

The message that you tried to send is probably stuck in Outbox, but it looks like Envelope Index may have gone awry as well, so let’s re-create both:

1. Quit Mail if it’s running.

2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.

3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.

4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.

5. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/, locate Outbox.mbox and move it to the Desktop if you want to preserve any messages waiting there, or just trash it otherwise.

6. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.

7. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.

Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

Thanks! I went through the steps, and am about to delete the backup Mail folder, but...

In the new ~/Mail/IMAP/ I have:
* Deleted Messages.imapmbox
* Drafts.imapmbox
* INBOX.imapmbox
* Sent messages.imapmbox

In the old I have:
* Deleted Messages.imapmbox
* Drafts.imapmbox
* INBOX.imapmbox
* Sent messages.imapmbox
AND
* documents
* dos
* mail
* Sent.imapmbox
* Trash.imapmbox

The folders have more folders inside with familiar names ("My Picures"), but either no or confusing-sounding documents inside.

I suspected in might be caching of mail when I work directly from the web browser. I sent a message to myself through the browser, viewed it, and deleted it. When Mail.app downloaded that activity off the server, it organized it into the 4 main folders already existing (without adding all the extra stuff). Theory nixed.

Any idea, before I delete the backup?
