Pictures turned sideways

I'm trying to put our recent vacation pictures into iDVD and most of them have turned out great. However, there are a lot of them that were taken with the camera on it's side for a "portrait" shot and the pictures load into iDVD sideways. I've searched on here and I can't seem to find an answer. Please help!!! Thanks in advance!

mdstone,

Although there are 'fixes' for your immediate problem, the fact remains that video is a horizontal format (unless you want to turn you TV set on its side).

When you shoot photos in the future you should try to avoid 'portrait' mode images if you expect to use then in movies and DVDs (unless, of course, you like looking at small images with black borders).

The pictures in iPhoto already display correctly. It
only happens when I add the pictures to iDVD.

The problem is that iPhoto just keep track of the orientation and rotates a file, if needed, on opening. The original file remains untouched.

You need to open the file with something - Photoshop, Photoshop Elements - whatever you have and then actually rotate the file and resave it.

For those who are computer savy and don't want to buy a program, there is GIMP a free GNU Image Manipulation Program at http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/

I disagree.

When you shoot photos, you should shoot them in a way that best presents the subject matter.

Plus, many people decide to use pictures taken well before the idea of doing a slideshow was the goal (or even before iLive existed...)

Anyway, no, the real fix here is nonexistent - I came in this morning trying to find the easy, user-friendly solution I MUST have been somehow overlooking - after all, iPhoto and iDVD go hand-in-hand, right? Fast and easy.

Wrong. iDVD should recognize iPhoto orientation data, period. It should also have the ability to rotate photos itself... it does neither.

It's a bug and a missed opportunity...

I would add to that ..... always consider how you intend to display /present the image / content when actually shooting.

Fred is only stating a fact. Portrait mode rarely fits or works well on a standard television screen, and is even less desirable on newer a-n-d---w-i-d-e-r LCD screens.

I guess you don't work as a pro shooter... You ALWAYS need to consider the intended output media/format when doing a shoot. I would modify your remark to: When you shoot photos, you should shoot them in a way that best presents the subject matter in the intended output format.

Video is only a horizontal format - putting a vertical image in a 4:3 video project is bad enough - but once you start shooting 16:9 HD it's really bad.

Sometimes I do, with architecture, but the primary format is almost always print. Therefore, if the orientation is not dictated (and it generally isn't), the photo is taken to best show the subject matter. Then, the client wants a slideshow...

Nevertheless, you can say that you always need to consider the intended "output media / format", but that doesn't help, either, with things like an old photo album... 😉

[edit] oh, also - as I said - regardless of whether someone wants to shoot horizonal, vertical, diagonal, or inside-out, iDVD should still be able to rotate images, and should still recognize iPhoto formatting.

I have the same question, but unfortunately none of the answers above are applicable. I am creating a slideshow in iDVD from images captured on a Nikon D2x with auto image rotation. All images are rotated correctly (checked not only by viewing in Bridge but also by opening in Photoshop), however some (not all) portrait/shot vertical images appear sideways when viewing the slideshow.
Any suggestions?
