iTunees 7.1.1 update haywired my iPod

Everything was working perfectly with 7.0 and then I applied the 7.1.1 update. Since then, I cannot connect to my iPod in iTunes. My PC sees it, but I get a message "The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones was not installed correctly.." I have done everything posted in artnum=93716 several times. I've reset, uninstalled, cleaned, reinstalled, and renamed until I'm ready to scream. The iPod will NOT show up in iTunes. It constantly displays the "do not disconnect" icon.
Does anyone have any additional help on this issue? I'm not a computer novice and this has got me pulling my hair out. I've used the iPod and iTunes with three different computers in multiple versions without any problems until 7.1.1. HELP!

Update: This version of iTunes has an apparently serious incompatibility with Windows Vista and caused me to have to restore my system to an earlier date. If you have not yet updated to 7.1.1 you may want to wait a while to see what happens. I was able to reinstall the last previous version and now my computer works again and my iPod works again and no real harm was done--just many hours of frustration.
