Samsung syncmaster 931BW 19" not compatible with Mac

Hello,
Just bought a Samsung syncmaster 931BW 19" and have been frying my eyes for the past two days trying to get the display to work properly. At it's optimum 1440x900 at 75Hz, the display won't display text properly. Small text (13 and lower) on internet or in Finders displays dancing pixels, headache to read, and at the display's "dynamic contrast" preset it's just too bright, apart from the text thing continuing. I could read better on my old CRT. Another strange thing is that using the DVI cable instead of the analogue I can only get up to 60Hz. My graphics card is a GeForce FX 5200. I have tried changing "text smoothing" in System preferances/Appearance, multiple calibrations, and downloaded displayconfigX to change refresh rates, plus change the OSD sharpness and fine settings in the Display's own menu. The closest I've got to anything "easy to read" is using the analogue D-sub cable at 75Hz but those ** pixels just don't stop dancing.

Please help, because Samsung tech doesn't support Mac (what a surprize!)

The sequel to this story is that I tried it on various other Macs including a Macmini in the shop where I bought the screen...and guess what-same problem! So I emailed the tech guys at Samsung and after a couple of meaningless emails managed to get the guy to admit that this particular screen probably wasn't compatible with Macs.
So if anyone holds the secret to this mystery please enlighten me within the next 5 days, as my warranty with the shop soon runs out.

I have a couple bits of advice for you. First off, when making a connection to VGA, you have to "tune" the monitor. There may be an Auto tune button on the front of the monitor or you may have to go into the menu system. Check your monitor's user manual for information on how to tune the VGA interface. This should stop dancing pixels.

Second comment is about refresh rate. It doesn't help at all to increase the refresh rate above 60Hz because the internal monitor processor will not pass more than a 60 Hz signal to the panel. Higher refresh rates are a legacy technology used to help reduce flicker on CRT-based monitors but not LCD monitors. So just leave things set at 60 Hz and don't worry about it.

I doubt what the Samsung tech admitted to is correct...that somehow the monitor isn't compatible with a Mac. There is nothing special about a Mac's video architecture that prevents it from working with a PC monitor.

This might be a problem with the last apple security update and Samsung monitors. I'm guessing someone at Samsung passed on some incorrect info to Apple, or apple interperted it wrong.

Before the update, it listed only 60hz refresh rates as useable with my monitor, now it gives me more options, mainly adding 75hz, that is out of the monitors range, and it has somehow told the my monitor that it's calibration is locked and auto adjustment no longer works.

The huge problem for me is that some apps switch to a non-acceptable refresh rate or even display size such as 832x624 and then I can't see the screen. Then I can't switch back to the old resolution... thus being totally blind on my mac.

I had this problem years ago on an old color sync, and therefor I always keep the display icon available on the menu bar.

I'm only typing now by blindly clicking with the mouse for up to 20 minutes to hopefully click on the display icon then randomly select on an acceptable range...

Apple needs to provide a fix for this ASAP. Before the update, it didn't correctly recognize my Samsung SyncMaster 710v and just gave me a generic list of LCD ranges, with only 60hz as possible choices. Now it correctly recognizes my display, but locks me out of the display's auto calibration feature, and lists refresh ranges and resolution options that it is not capable of running, then when executed, leave me blind, then blindly clicking forever to hopefully click on the icon, then a correct refresh and resolution value.

If it wasn't for keeping the display icon in the menubar, I'd probably have to have brought it into the shop again and again wonder what the heck was up since the shop's display would most likely be different. Zapping the PRAM didn't reset it to a default value.

All in all a huge pain in the butt, and now I can't run a piece of software that I bought my mini for in the firstplace as it keeps switching to the higher (75hz) refresh rate.

Please, pass this on to the appropriate tech ASAP so that they can patch it.

I just purchased a Samsung Syncmaster 932B, which I think is a very similar display. Is the 931 BW a wide-screen display? THe 932B is a standard format. I am running a PowerMac G5 at 1280 x 1024 and 75Hz (although I don't see any difference if I go to 60Hz), using the DVI cable that came w/ the Syncmaster. The display is plugged into an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro AGP graphics card. I've switched through various apps and everything seems to work fine. What specific apps are you having trouble with?

I am not having the problems that you cite, although I am sitting here wondering if perhaps I was too cheap to buy a better display. Actually, everything looks OK to me until I plug my old monitor (a failing Apple 17" CRT Studio Display) back in and realize how much sharper the old CRT is in comparison. I came onto the Discussions forums to see if I could get any ideas about improving the sharpness of the Syncmaster, thinking that perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

I'm certain the last patch patch either 10.4.9 or security update has broken something for my Samsung displatw model SyncMaster 710v. After a re-instalation of the system software and using it for 2 days, everything was fine. After applying all the updates, it very quickly broke again on a resolution change as requested by a program that had literally done it thousands of times before pre 10.4.9.

Using dispalay overrides that wored both on 10.4.9 and earlier do noy help once it is busted. I will reinstall tonight agaiin and also use the display overrides along with resolution overrides to take the call out of the system's hands until apple releases a patch for it or 10.5. Whatever comes first.

As for your question Samsung moitors only run at 60hz. It is listed on their website, and again, I wish they'd get rid of that convention ald stick with just pixel updates. Pretty much all mdern displays have pixel updates faster than the brain/eye can preceive them. The threshhold being around 100 hz.
