Canoscan N650U How do I?

I have searched, read, looked for, downloaded, and cannot get the imac20 to recognize my scanner. I went to the Canon D'load site and downloaded the driver, that they say is for MAC. It asks for an installation directory as installer cannot locate, What files and where do I put them? Please be specific as possible as I am a newbie at MAC.

Thanks
Harleymon

I tried the ones listed and none of them helped. When installing the files the "Install" program asks for a location, to install the files. My dilema is where do I install the files and which files do I install. The download package from Canon has several directories. There are .dat files and a driver bundle etc, but no explanation as to where you place these files. If one knew where to place these files then it would be a no brainer. Not knowing the MAC system, makes this a daunting task to say the least.
Thanks for the Help.....

You're referring to applications that operate that scanner, so generally it should all go into the "Applications" folder. Mac OS X generally places everything that's related into one folder - there are not parts of software scattered all about in OS X. Keep in mind that if there is bundled software included, it's not all related, except in the most general sense.

Put the Canoscan tool box, if there is one, in its own folder in the Applications folder. Put each brand of software into its own folder, again in the Applications folder. So, if there is Photostudio software, it all goes into a Photostudio folder in the Applications folder. If there is Omnipage software, it all goes into its own folder in the Applications folder. Etc., etc. If there is some sort of OCR application, place that as is, without a folder, into the Applications folder.

I hope this helps and doesn't confuse. I've been looking through my Applications folders trying to find the twain. My earlier description may have been misleading (when it comes to the twain) since I was assuming it had to be there somewhere. However, I was describing what I saw in my Applications folder, and apparently the twain isn't installed there.

I haven't been able to find it anywhere else, either, but in the documentation I notice a reference to the "ScanGear CS" being the Twain. I have a Canoscan 8400F. The installation did place a Canoscan 8400F folder (containing html and images for the Scanning Guide) in my Mac HD, next to the - Applications, Library, System, User Guides And Information, and Users - folders. The Installer Log File [I hadn't realized the ScanGear CS is the twain] shows:

The one application and three applications folders in my Applications folder that are related to my scanner are:

1. OmniPage SE_DirectOCR (application only)

2. OmniPage SE (containing 15 items - including an exact duplicate of the above #1. in an OmniPage Extras folder)

3. PhotoStudio (containing 13 items)

4. CanoScan Toolbox 4.8
containing:
CanoScan Toolbox X (application)
basicj.ocr (Text document)
PCat_carbon.shlb (Shared Library)
pafcv2_carb.lib (Shared Library)
Installer Log File

Looking through the packaging I notice there is also included an Adobe Photoshop Elements disc that I hadn't bothered to install since it wasn't mentioned in the Quick Start Guide, so I suppose that could be put in the Applications folder as well.

Am I to assume that any application needing scanner
will know the twain driver will be in the Canon
folder, as the system knows this?

I used Spotlight to search for both twain and "scangear cs" but get no actual location other than an unopenable preferences item - ScanGear CS 10.2 prefs - otherwise only seeing html from the Scanning Guide. Regret I can't be more help.

Elements has an installer of its own, but yes, it will install into Applications. There may be a plug-in that will let you scan directly into PE, which is more convenient than hassling with the canonscan utility if you plan to edit your photos there. (Not all models have a plug-in available-not sure about yours).

WOW!

Do I have a lot to digest. I shall go through my directories and see what I can find out. It may take me a day or so so be patient. I will get back and leave word as to how I make out.
I am anxious to see how this turns out. It may help with my printer problem , but that will have to wait. Thank you so much "myhighway" and "Barbara." It is nice to see the MAC community is avidly taking care of it's own..

Hi Harleymon!

I should mention that my Canon scanner came with a software program that the instructions pointed out was only for windows users, so naturally I didn't try to install it. In addition, my old umax brand scanner (that I used in OS 9 and that later worked in OS X) came with more than one windows-only program included on the install disc. So it may be typical, and your install disc may also contain something, so be sure to look for that in the instructions or in the Read-me. The Canon website shows the dates for your software of 2000-2002, 2000 being the same year I got my umax scanner.
