Dell 1600n printer

Hi all,

My wife wants her own Mac. Trouble is, she needs it to work with a Dell 1600n printer.

Now I've seen some other postings that cover this printer (it's really a Xerox), but... I can't get any of the drivers to work.

Tiger recognises the printer as a Dell through Bonjour, but won't print to it, and definitely won't scan to the Mac.

Does anyone have any tips? I'd like to replace the last PC in the family!!

hey' i'm not sure if it will be any helpful. once i called apple when i bought my macbook to help me with printers (one was HP and one was a Dell). They told me that Dell doesnt have drivers for Macs'. But you know what... i think Dell's printers stink anyway. You might be better off getting rid off it. Just a suggestion.

Hi Steve,

I've had the same trouble finding a driver for my Dell 1600n. I finally found this helpful article (see the entry dated June 17, 2005):

http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/printing/topic4337.html

It links to Xerox's website for the WorkCentre PE120i:

http://www.support.xerox.com/go/results.asp?Xtype=download&prodID=PE120PE120I&Xlang=enUS&Xcntry=USA&prodName=WorkCentre%20PE120/120i

I downloaded and installed this driver, and it prints fine. I should note that My 1600n is attached to a Windows 2000 box I have set up as a print server (not directly to my Mac), so I installed the printer through my Windows Workgroup.

I have yet to get the Network Scan feature to work, which is what I really wanted anyway, so I'll update here if I find a way.

Good luck,
Tucker.

Hi Steve,

I attached my 1600n directly via USB this morning (in an effort to get my Mac to recognize it as a TWAIN device), and it was recognized in the printer control panel as 'Laser MFP 1600n' (connection via USB). From there I clicked on Printer Setup, and chose the Xerox WC PE120 Series PS as the printer model.

I did notice that in the printer browser (by clicking the + button) that there is a Xerox 1600n listed with a connection of 'Bonjour'. When I tried that one I got the same error you did.

An update on the scanning: still no luck. Even directly connected to the Mac via USB it won't find it as a TWAIN device.

I did, however, find a handy guide to cleaning the scanner glass. You may have heard of the wide spread problem with the glass getting a hazy film on the under side. This may help:

Cheers,
Tucker.
